The Lesson Of The Monkeys

They started with a cage containing five monkeys.
Inside the cage, they hung a banana on a string with a set of stairs placed under it.
Before long, a monkey went to the stairs and started to climb towards the banana.
As soon as he started up the stairs, the psychologists sprayed all of the other monkeys with ice cold water.
After a while, another monkey made an attempt to obtain the banana.
As soon as his foot touched the stairs, all of the other monkeys were sprayed with ice cold water.
It's wasn't long before all of the other monkeys would physically prevent any monkey from climbing the stairs.
Now, the psychologists shut off the cold water, removed one monkey from the cage and replaced it with a new one.
The new monkey saw the banana and started to climb the stairs.
To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attacked him.
After another attempt and attack, he discovered that if he tried to climb the stairs, he would be assaulted.
Next they removed another of the original five monkeys and replaced it with a new one.
The newcomer went to the stairs and was attacked.
The previous newcomer took part in the punishment with enthusiasm!
Likewise, they replaced a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.
Every time the newest monkey tried to climb the stairs, he was attacked.
The monkeys had no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they were beating any monkey that tried.
After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys had ever been sprayed with cold water.
Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approached the stairs to try for the banana.
Why not?
Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been around here."

In The USA, Its time to replace all the monkeys in all levels of our government. Perhaps then, our nation will return to We The People.

Yes, only when replaced one at a time. That's why we need ALL NEW monkeys...

The Lesson Of The Monkeys

Isn't real.

a monkey went to the stairs and started to climb towards the banana.
As soon as he started up the stairs, the psychologists sprayed all of the other monkeys with ice cold water.

If that were a real experiment with real monkeys the first thing they'd learn is to go up the stairs in numbers rather than one at a time.

Avoiding the water is just as powerful of an incentive as acquiring the banana.

In The USA, Its time to replace all the monkeys in all levels of our government. Perhaps then, our nation will return to We The People.

Although I agree with the sentiment, if your mindset is the preceding experiment, then replacing "all the monkeys in all levels of our government" at best would only lead to the experiment restarting, with just a repeat of the same outcome.

Seems the lesson would be better if the conclusion was "replace the scientists with people that produce something of value rather than sitting around torturing monkeys all day."

Does anybody remember Cheeta, he was Tarzans monkey, he was a smart monkey, you get Cheeta and CoCo the chimp together and they will get that banana.

Do you think that the US government system itself is the problem? The type of government not those who govern? I never considered that...
The monkey lesson just seemed like a good example to me when I first read it many years ago. It seems that all levels of government have 'inherited' bad practices from both their predecessors and their hierarchy.
Granted, We The People are the ones that put them in power. Also, the ones that tolerate their incompetence in the jobs at hand. Most citizens don't even know when their "town hall meetings" are taking place let alone what is being discussed.

replace the scientists with people that produce something of value rather than sitting around torturing monkeys all day.
LOL, Agreed.
I think the origin of this came from UseNet or some psychologist long ago. It was probably intended for another purpose but it was presented to me originally on a political discussion. I always liked it because I tend to believe people fail not systems. Your comment now has me looking at the systems (designed and put in place by people) as a possible cause.

Does anybody remember Cheeta, he was Tarzans monkey, he was a smart monkey, you get Cheeta and CoCo the chimp together and they will get that banana.
Cheeta and CoCo would certainly get the banana and turn the water off.

so we will see what summer brings so plz bring the summer
