Best room mate I have ever had was when I was 18, it was a guy that was a good friend and gay.. Not only did he cook and clean but was great to sit and talk to .... But we had a rule that most don't have no over night guest unless they were just friends sleeping on the couch..

Now my only room mate is my dog~~~ best room mate yet bigsmile

In my single days, I experienced both female roommates and male roommates.. being a female, I found the male roommate easier to get along with - it was platonic - .. the female was too emo

Last year.
He cooked and was easy to get along.
He taught me so much. Aim high and not settle for anything less.

Doesn't matter.
The "better" roommate is the one you vet the crap out of and interview exhaustively. Not to mention having enough separate living space (e.g. 2+ bathrooms).

Even then, it's most likely going to lead to conflict and problems anyway.

Gender is irrelevant.

I mean:
I believe a cute girl...who knows to cook

if that's all you know about her, then get ready to hear:
"I'm a little short on rent this month. I promise to make your favorite meal and pay you back later! Oh, you mean the electric bill doubled since I have to turn the a/c up to compensate for an oven that's always on? Well, you said we'd split the utilities 50/50...Oh, come on, I randomly cooked that 4 course turkey dinner and you ate some of it to clear room from the fridge for your stuff, if you have a problem with all those dishes, you do them, I'm tired from cooking all day, I'll do them later this month...Oh, no, Steve is the one that's going to be staying with me for a couple of days. Tim was that guy that came over Monday, Greg was that guy that hung out all day Tuesday and drank all your beer, Pete was Sunday, Steve's a new guy, so hot. I can't help being cute and popular, this is my place too, I can have 'friends' over if I want."

One time my roommate suddenly got married and left.
I had to put an ad in the paper for a new one.

The old roommate and her fiancé were sitting on the
couch when a prospective roommate called..it went
sort of like this:

The fellow said he was looking for a place for his
girlfriend, so he asked me the bedroom sizes and the
bed size..where they would be located, windows, etc.

The couple on the couch is starting to look at me funny.
They are beginning to laugh.

I say, 'Hush! This poor fellow has asthma or something
he can barely talk!'

He is asking all sorts of weird questions (I am clueless
never having done this before) and his breathing is
becoming quite labored which I am reporting to the couple
who are now convulsed with laughter.

I am pretty mad at them as I really need the roommate.

Suddenly, it seems he is having a fit! I tell the couple,
'This guy may be epileptic.'

They lose it.

I never got it until the guy hung up (sort of) and they
explained some of the facts of life to me.

Moral of story: Do NOT room with anyone you do not know..
personally.

Doesn't matter the gender: the personality, habits & schedules are the rules when it comes to roommates:

2 neat freaks can't live together bc they will never be satisfied w/how clean the other one keeps the place (or the shared spaces like kitchen/bathroom/living rm

2 slobs can't live together bc both will be unable to find anything they need for daily living (like keys/clean clothes etc) in the mess they both make

Pet lover/non pet lover: never gonna work

One who works 5pm to 12pm & one who works 9-5: in general different shifts sounds like its good but in practice that doesn't work either: you are asleep & have to get up at 6:30 for your 9-5 while your roommate is just coming in at 1/2 a.m. & will be deep in sleep while you are making noise in the morning getting ready - not good

Full time employed/pt employed or student: the finances always come up short for the one with sketchy income & then the rent doesn't get paid & then no roommate problem bc no apt. to have a roommate in LOL...

Living alone is best until you find the person who will be your partner either marriage or living together. The inclusion of a "relationship" i.e. love/sex etc. seems to help even out all of the bad habits of the other person so that you will put up with them whereas when living w/someone strictly as roommates, you will not put up with the same bad habits.
