as long as we are on this cotton pickin theme..

The Hobby Lobby cotton display in question. (Photo: Facebook/Hobby Lobby)
crafts store Hobby Lobby is taking serious heat for a store display that one woman is calling “racist.”

On Thursday, Facebook user Daniell Rider posted a photo to Hobby Lobby’s Facebook page, of a vase of cotton flowers displayed in a Texas store. She captioned it, “This decor is WRONG on SO many levels. There is nothing decorative about raw cotton… A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves. A little sensitivity goes a long way. PLEASE REMOVE THIS ‘décor.’”

The $29.99 stems (marked down to $15 on the company website) was shared more than 15K times and earned 169K comments, an overwhelming majority of which ridiculed Rider for being “too sensitive” and a few that defended her stance.

“LOL likely written by someone wearing a cotton T-shirt and cotton jeans and cotton underwear,” wrote one Facebook user. “Must not of thought that one through,” wrote someone else.

“Boycott Hobby Lobby,” wrote another.

“This is crazy. Cotton is a fact of life,” added one. “People still pick it. That happened 150 years ago. Slaves also picked tobacco, harvested rice and many other things. We can’t just get rid of them. Well Lowe’s sells chains and rope. You think they should get rid of that too?”

Hobby Lobby did not return Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment; however, cotton has been igniting backlash recently.

On Friday, Randy Lowry, the president of Lipscomb University in Nashville, sent an apology letter to African-American students who recently visited his home to discuss university life, some of whom objected to cotton-stalk centerpieces at the president’s home (although it’s unknown whether they were the same that were sold at Hobby Lobby).

“The content of the centerpieces was offensive, and I could have handled the situation with more sensitivity,” Lowry wrote. “I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness.”

What if someone had a party for jewish guests and put gas masks on the table? I dont think the natural response would be to point out that jewish people were not the only ones to wear gas masks.

This is a typo, correct? I don't recall Jewish people during the holocaust wearing them.. j/s

no typo, I did not state jewish people wore them, I implied that they could be ASSOCIATED with the jewish, since the nazis who killed them wore them during.

Snowflakes are easily offended and whining. People calling them out on it are not snowflakes. They are just calling out the snowflakes on their behavior

Seems to me these students were the ones continuing the stereotype.

I just asked people (that I know...black and white) about this. All said put on your big kid pants

Did they have to pick cotton as slaves? What about the Jews? Hell even the Irish were less than nothing.

the EXACT same as 'snowflakes' who 'call out' others on their behaviors...

people post opinions all over the internet, many of them are not to share how wonderful and perfect the world is....j/s

when was the last black to pick any cotton anyway? 150 years ago?... i guess all the blacks wanna live in the past, and not care about the future...

we live no more 'in the past' than those who memorialize confederate flags, soldiers, or the 'founding fathers'....

most were shot trying to escape... the ones going in the gas chambers didn't know it till it was to late...

gas masks don't scare the jews, nor would they try to ban them for any reason..

I'm thinking if you have Jews over you would have to remove the oven from
your house.

So were these "African Americans" served fried chicken and watermelon?

Is it wrong to use pussywillows in a center piece because women an wimps may be offended?

I find that most black people seek attention and they are always trying to get something from others. Was watching ABC during hurricane Irma and the showed some black youth helping themselves to some new Nikes from a store they broke the window out of. And they will even shot each other to get a pair of shoes. I don't understand why they think they should get respect when they don't show respect.

there is nothing here about anyone trying to BAN anything. There was merely a guest who went on social media to contribute her opinion about their choice of centerpiece.

dust, I dont know how often you have 'guests' in your home, and I wont get into right and wrong. I will just use the term tasteful and tacky instead.

Yes, it is TACKY to use a decor for alleged 'guests' which is going to have the opposite effect of making them feel welcome. It would be TACKY to have jewish guests and have nazi decorations up.

Being 'offended' is not just for ******* and wimps. If people did not find offense they would not complain and people complain about all types of things ALL the time.

I find that most people who comment about 'most black people' trying to get something from others or about them shooting each other, know very few personally, are very limited in their travels and experiences, have serious tunnelvision regarding the shortcomings in their own group and/or dont bother to read because they think the internet or media will tell them all of what happens everywhere all the time.

I dont understand why 'they' should NOT get respect if they have given respect.

and yes, they were served chicken and watermelon.

it seems like those complaining about snowflakes are themselves, then, snowflakes.

The truth is people have every right to express how they feel or felt. That is the nature of social media. And public officials of this day and age have a modern responsiblity to pay attention to their public, and their feelings/opinions on those things that are easy to fix, like not putting cotton stalks on the table because you have African American guests.

What if someone had a party for jewish guests and put gas masks on the table? I dont think the natural response would be to point out that jewish people were not the only ones to wear gas masks.

Or for white men and had NAMBLA flyers on the table? It would not be simply brushed off because not only white men are child lovers.

These negative stereotypes and associations can be unnecessary so if they offend it harms noone to adapt for the next time. After all, having 'guests' usually implies efforts are being taken to make someone 'welcome' in their surroundings.

YEP! I'm melting. I have been on here over a year and I still don't know what a noone is.

I have been on here over a year and I still don't know what a noone is.

I just recently started using that because I see it here a lot. My spell check doesn't like it so I had to add it to the dictionary. I think it means no one as in not even one but the space is subtractive when used in conjunction with a person.
Perhaps it is an effort to save a type stroke.

I'm guilty of shortening words.
