The only thing sillier than the fact that this incident happened, is that some people are reacting to it by trying to turn it into a national condemnation of all college age children in the United States.

Best response: ignore it. Leave it to the school authorities to handle it.

By creating forum threads like this about it, and writing articles and so on in blogs and news ditties, you cause the people who initiated the protest to BECOME CORRECT FOR DOING SO.

Some black people found a cotton STALK an offensive choice of centerpiece for a dinner focused on black dinner guests. I doubt they care what people wear on their backs.

But...did they stay and eat the dinner?
Did they see it and storm right out?

or

Did they see it and not care until someone mentioned it and then they agreed that it could be worth some fame or focus if they made a big deal out of it?

I don't know that they made a big deal. They typed on their computer. And like anything, someone always is gonna be first to say something whatever it is ...

The cotton plant is actually very beautiful to look at. A centerpiece that uses cotton as an accent could be very beautiful.
Personally I have used cotton in centerpieces to represent snow or purity.

Someone has to have the mindset to associate a centerpiece as offensive. That mindset is indicative of their own feelings of oppression. To proclaim that someone is oppressing them because of their own fears is ludicrous.

Its a result of the "Oh Poor Me" syndrome.

Why not? No different then 'mingling' about all the things other people do or feel.

So they stayed and ate the dinner, enjoyed the night and then when they were home in front of their computers.. then they started to complain... Lol

Why couldn't it just be a nice looking centerpiece and nothing more then that.. why does it have to be a friggin conspiracy.

Some people live to complain Lol.

again, noone said they were oppressed, and there was no protest,

people are projecting on this thread

the dinner guest merely did not approve of the centerpiece, its being made more of a deal than it is

if ones ancestors were forced to pick cotton, it is every bit their right and expectation to find an INTENTIONAL placement of a cotton stalk just for their presence as offensive or at least a tacky choice

there is no 'poor me' syndrome anymore than the millions of people that complain about anything else on the internet daily....

its not complicated, people 'complain' every day about all sorts of things even on Mingle, it doesnt mean they 'live to complain, it means they are humans with opinions.

no conspiracy, just opinion like all of those being posted here.

I make door wreaths. I love different crafts. I saw a lot of wreaths made with cotton stalks. Nothing wrong with it. If someone wants to be offended by it, that is there problem to get over.

Black slaves weren't the only ones picking cotton or share croppers

and it for sure was not the only crop that they did. so please explain why to what ever level it is being singled out as offensive

Damn skippy!

But don't forget, college kids wanted play doh, coloring books, etc just because Trump was elected. Even my 26 yr old son said his generation is pitiful

this was not a decorative choice for looks, this was a specific choice related to race. Posting their opinions on media is no indication that they are not 'over' it.

noone was ever the ONLY one to go through anything, yet people on social media including minglers find reasons to complain, because they are humans with opinions on their OWN experiences.

because it is the most well known and the most commonly read about or learned about source of wealth that the slaves contributed to.

when did something suddenly have to be the ONLY time for people to have opinions about it?

How do you know it was meant for decoration? They were invited to his home! Crafts are like fashion. Cotton stalks have been in for a bit. Wheat stalks were popular at one time. Because of the offendeds opinion? They posted their opinions for people to see and give their own opinions. If they are upset over that IMO they need to get over their own issues. Even minglers have opinions

as long as we are on this cotton pickin theme..

The Hobby Lobby cotton display in question. (Photo: Facebook/Hobby Lobby)
crafts store Hobby Lobby is taking serious heat for a store display that one woman is calling “racist.”

On Thursday, Facebook user Daniell Rider posted a photo to Hobby Lobby’s Facebook page, of a vase of cotton flowers displayed in a Texas store. She captioned it, “This decor is WRONG on SO many levels. There is nothing decorative about raw cotton… A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves. A little sensitivity goes a long way. PLEASE REMOVE THIS ‘décor.’”

The $29.99 stems (marked down to $15 on the company website) was shared more than 15K times and earned 169K comments, an overwhelming majority of which ridiculed Rider for being “too sensitive” and a few that defended her stance.

“LOL likely written by someone wearing a cotton T-shirt and cotton jeans and cotton underwear,” wrote one Facebook user. “Must not of thought that one through,” wrote someone else.

“Boycott Hobby Lobby,” wrote another.

“This is crazy. Cotton is a fact of life,” added one. “People still pick it. That happened 150 years ago. Slaves also picked tobacco, harvested rice and many other things. We can’t just get rid of them. Well Lowe’s sells chains and rope. You think they should get rid of that too?”

Hobby Lobby did not return Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment; however, cotton has been igniting backlash recently.

On Friday, Randy Lowry, the president of Lipscomb University in Nashville, sent an apology letter to African-American students who recently visited his home to discuss university life, some of whom objected to cotton-stalk centerpieces at the president’s home (although it’s unknown whether they were the same that were sold at Hobby Lobby).

“The content of the centerpieces was offensive, and I could have handled the situation with more sensitivity,” Lowry wrote. “I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness.”
