LOL, My phone is blowing up and I'm getting email alerts from the electric company that ... Hurricane Gordon is going to hit us. I looked at The National Hurricane Website http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ and Intellicast radar loop http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx?location=default&region=jef&animate=true and not only is Gordon not a hurricane, its moving this way but its not an immediate threat. 5:00 PM EDT Mon Sep 3 Location: 26.2°N 82.6°W Moving: WNW at 17 mph Min pressure: 1006 mb Max sustained: 50 mph Right now its off the coast of Florida. When it moves out into the Gulf on its way to my house it will probably become a Cat one or Cat 2 but I highly doubt it will go any higher than a Cat two and I'm not evacuating for a Cat two. According to the storm surge forecast, where I am located will get minimal surge mainly near the beaches. (3 ft surge expected) I sit at 22 ft and have an additional 9 feet to my floor (I have a raised foundation) My engine in my truck sits about 36 inches off the ground so I have at least 25 ft before the water hits my engine and 32 ft before it creeps in my front door. The last hurricane was a weak cat two and aside from losing power for about 14 hours, no damage at all. I'm LOL because since I posted my last entry I have gotten 4 more alerts advising me to seek immediate shelter because of "Hurricane" Gordon... Paranoia at its finest.

So, yesterdays series of immediate shelter are no longer blowing up my phone? Fearmongering? Tropical storm Gordon could become a cat 1 hurricane by the time it reaches landfall but aside from flooding to the North from rainfall, the only threat is some wind and a 3ft storm surge expected. Yesterday, I sat on my porch and watched as people frantically went for supplies and plywood. I didn't and won't even fill my water jugs. I am watching its progress tho. Right now 82° RealFeel® 91° Mostly cloudy Winds from the ESE @ 12 mph Humidity: 78% Pressure: 30.00 in ↓ UV Index: 6 Cloud Cover: 76% Ceiling: 27617 ft Dew Point: 74° F Visibility: 8 mi NOAA's Hurricane website shows it will come to shore arounf the Gulfport area, about 25 miles from me. There are no zone maps showing any coastal areas with more than 3ft of surge. Its currently Location: 28.9°N 87.3°W Moving: NW at 15 mph Min pressure: 1001 mb Max sustained: 65 mph A cat one hurricane is 74 mph winds. Cat 2 hurricane is 96 mph winds. The electric company and other utility companies in the area have been trimming trees and laying burried cables for years. The only reason to think I might lose electric is if a power sub-station gets hit with high winds. I might lose internet for a bit tho. The city just recently did pressure tests on the water and sewer lines this spring. I doubt there will be a problem with the water either. As for the flash flooding. This spring also had the city cleaning out and digging out drainage ditches. I'll go out and make sure my trash can is secure and there's nothing loose on the porches but aside from that... I'm just gunna enjoy the storm. I love storms. Hurricanes don't usually have thunder and lightning tho and that's what I really like. Gotta go on a beer run later.
