UNITED NATIONS — President Trump has long argued that the United States has been taken advantage of by other nations — a “laughing stock to the entire World,” he said on Twitter in 2014 — and his political rise was based on the premise that he had the strength and resolve to change that.

But at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump got a comeuppance on the world’s biggest stage. Delivering a speech that aimed to establish U.S. “sovereignty” over the whims and needs of other nations, the president’s triumphant moment was marred in the first minute when he was met by laughter — at his expense.

The embarrassing exchange came when Trump boasted that his administration had accomplished more over two years than “almost any administration” in American history, eliciting audible guffaws in the cavernous chamber hall.

The president appeared startled. “Didn’t expect that reaction,” he said.

He has always been obsessed that people are laughing at the president. From the mid-’80s, he’s said: ‘The world is laughing at us. They think we’re fools,’ ” said Thomas Wright, a Europe analyst at the Brookings Institution. “It’s never been true, but he’s said it about every president. It’s the first time I’m aware of that people actually laughed at a president. I think it is going to drive him absolutely crazy. It will play to every insecurity he has.”

For Trump, the moment wasn’t just embarrassing. It also punctured one of the core fabulist assertions of a president who has, according to Washington Post fact-checkers, made more than 5,000 false or misleading statements since taking office.

As the midterm elections approach, Trump has begun boasting of a long list of accomplishments for his administration, at one point reciting them at a recent campaign rally from two pieces of paper that he pulled from his suit jacket.

In doing so, the president typically has claimed sweeping success and placed himself favorably in historical comparison to the nation’s greatest leaders. At a rally in Springfield, Mo., last week, Trump was wrapping up an hour-long address to supporters with some flowery teleprompter prose about the courage of America’s founders when he strayed from the script to assert that his election in 2016 was “the greatest movement in the history of our country.”

At the United Nations, Trump’s claim to have done more in less than two years than most of the 44 previous administrations defied any bounds of reality — or hubris. The difference was that he was not talking to a room full of excited, red-hat-wearing “MAGA” supporters who cheer him on.

How are we measuring 'more'?

unemployment 2009 - 9.9 percent
unemployment 2016 - 4.7 percent DOWN 5.2 percent

unemployment 2017 - 4.1 percent DOWN .6 of a percent

GDP growth 2009 NEGATIVE 2.5
GDP growth 2016 POSITIVE 1.6 (up 4.1 percent)

GDP growth 2017 POSITIVE 2.2 (up 0.6 percent)

https://www.thebalance.com/unemployment-rate-by-year-3305506

according to Forbes, as it concerns jobs created:
A better way to understand how the job market is doing is to include the revisions and look at a multi-month average. This is especially important due to the impact of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma since September only added 38,000 jobs.

Updated BLS information now has Trump now only being behind Obama's
2012: 2.142 million
2013: 2.302 million
2014: 2.998 million
2015: 2.713 million
2016: 2.24 million
2017: 2.18 million

https://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckjones/2018/01/06/president-trumps-first-year-of-job-growth-was-below-president-obamas-last-six-years/#dcfa26425ab2

so except by completely ignoring math and numbers, by what standard has Trumps one year done 'more' than Obamas eight?

We have people here, American people that don't understand this. I think it's pretty safe to say that someone who doesn't live here, certainly doesn't. Ignorance is everywhere.

I fixed your links. So they will be clickable on this post.

hhhhmmmmmmm... Numbers and graphs can be manipulated and often are by the party that is desperate to salvage any credibility they may have which they ruin by cooking the books anyway. I'll go by what is seen and felt everyday, and that is people actually going to work or going on vacation or a night at the movies. Its like night and day the differance between this administration and the last. If the democrats would accept and acknowledge the FACTS that Trump is doing the right things to keep the U.S. On a steady incline . Anybody that denies the U.S. Is doing much better now than Obamas years are living in denial!

What a shock, countries like Iran, Syria and Turkey laughed at us. You failed to mention a day prior (maybe two days prior) Iran all but declared war on the United States claiming we were behind the terror attack at their military parade.

The ones who laughed at President Trump were non US allies and countries we are reducing aid to or downright cutting it out all together.

The UN is an expensive, ineffective, useless bureaucratic mess. The best thing we could do is eliminate all funding for it (since we are the biggest financial supporter of the UN) and remove it from our country.

Some more of that far right, "talking out the side of your neck". The diplomats that laughed at Trump were from Germany and Sweden. Two of our biggest allies. Iran, Syria, and Turkey had nothing to do with it.

Sweden is no ally. They play all sides of the fence and cooperate with state sponsors of terror. The German delegation isn't much better since President Trump has cut aid because of Merkle.

Sweden is no ally. They play all sides of the fence and cooperate with state sponsors of terror. The German delegation isn't much better since President Trump has cut aid because of Merkle.

Germany,

Germany and the United States: Reliable Allies

"Seven decades after the end of World War II and a quarter-century after the end of the Cold War, roughly seven-in-ten Americans see Germany as a reliable ally, and about six-in-ten Germans trust the United States, according to a Pew Research Center survey. A majority of Germans believe it is more important for Germany to have strong ties with the United States than with Russia".

http://www.pewglobal.org/2015/05/07/germany-and-the-united-states-reliable-allies/

Sweden,

"The American Embassy in Stockholm assists in the promotion of strong bilateral ties between the United States and Sweden and plays an active role in public diplomacy, business services, and traditional diplomatic relations. The interests of the United States and Sweden converge and correspond in many areas. In addition to those cited above, the American Embassy directs its energies to building close ties in economic, commercial, and regional relations".

http://se.usembassy.gov/our-relationship/

What happens to us?’ Why Sweden is so worried about the Trump administration".

In part,

"It’s not party politics that bother them: These are conservatives, by Swedish standards, and Republican presidents have suited them in the past. Trump’s tweeting and bragging don’t bother them that much either, though they find these unseemly. The real problem is deeper: Sweden’s economic and political model depends on Pax Americana, the set of American-written and American-backed rules that have governed transatlantic commerce and politics for 70 years — and they fear Trump will bring Pax Americana crashing down. Nor are they alone: Variations of this conversation are taking place in every European capital and many Asian capitals too".

Can you prove this statement about Sweden? Or is it just some more empty Republican rhetoric?

They play all sides of the fence and cooperate with state sponsors of terror.

Is Iran really ‘the world’s leading state sponsor of terror’?

"President Trump has claimed that Iran is the world’s “leading state sponsor of terror”.

But is that fair?

Before he became president, Trump said the “world’s biggest funder of terrorism” was Saudi Arabia – not Iran. So is his latest claim is just political rhetoric?"

Unemployment is the lowest it's been in half a century. People are working, spending, and paying down their mortgage. The economy is great.

The U.N needs us..we Don't need them. I propose moving the U.N to France or Germany or some other country and let us stiff them on the bill for about 20 or so years as we play a minor roll.
Also being from NYC I can tell you that having the U.N here is a royal pain in the a*s.. the traffic caused by it is terrible . The diplomats have immunity from..everything. the park wherever they want..do whatever they want..some have even committed crimes...and we can't touch them. They take full advantage of these liberties . Having diplomatic licence plates on your car is a licence to break our laws without penalty.

So let some other country deal with it.

To some, numbers and verifiable and logical facts, data, conclusions pales in comparison to feelings and what they see in their corner of the country.

I do not really post expecting much else in those cases than what is the normal response. "I dont believe it. Its fake. all that matters is my personal experiences."

trump supporters can stick their heads in the sand to try to pretend that their posterboy isn't as big of a joke as he actually is,but the fact that the other leaders of the world PUBLICALLY LAUGHED AT HIM is irrefutable evidence of what the rest of the world REALLY thinks about Donald trump.

Were they laughing when he created a dialogue with North Korea that ended the Korean War and got the remains of hundreds of dead soldiers returned to the United States and was personally waiting at the airport when they returned to the US? Were they laughing when North Korea started dismantling their Nuclear program? Were they laughing when we all but defeated ISIS?

Were they laughing when Trump lowered unemployment so much that even Kaepernick got a job? laugh

One of the reasons..just one... that I voted for Trump was his promise to destroy I.S.I.S
Without fanfare he hire a general to do just that.

That general did not negotiate ..did not delay..did not take prisoners

He killed them

Now we do not have I.S.I.S. chopping off westerners heads on T.V...we do not have a president crying and doing nothing to stop it..we do not have I.S.I.S. making a fool of us to the world.

Thank you for keeping your promise Mr. President. :)

Thank God!
Somehow, may be due to Mercel's move; issues got obscured by allotting quota systems to European countries to take in the refugees 1+ million and this was possible because the world went into denial that a war was on. That is till the moment Trump declared - Muslim Ban (till the root cause was unearthed!) Never happened in the History, sent a tremor through out the Muslim speaking world.

Allow me to add that the London Mayor who banned Trump from entering the City visited India early this year and met some groups here. Our Government granted him permission as part of Goodwill to UK. The Mayor returned back and then hosted members of the Khalistan Group (a separatists group sponsored by Pakistan) to hold massive rally.
So we are beginning to see a widespread root.

Moreover, the organization's ideology remains widespread. U.S. Army Lt. Gen Paul Funk asserted that the group’s repressive ideology continues; “the conditions remain present for ISIS to return, and only through coalition and international efforts can the defeat become permanent"

Ideologies often outlast those who created and spread them, even if the organization's most inspiring leaders are killed.

ISIS spokesperson Abu Mohammed al-Adnani said, before he was killed, that potential setbacks in Mosul and Raqqa would not spell the group's end; "the fight is losing the will and the desire to fight".

As much as the statement is frightening, it indicates that extremist ideology is still evolving. The challenge is to counter this ideology, rather than only focusing on military and security approaches.

It's also possible that while ISIS lost for now; it has gained a secondary objective: a Muslim foothold in Europe at last. Europe will soon understand that the issue is not the M people; It is the ideology that won't allow even the second or third generation to join mainstream society.

Correction:
The irony is ISIS (Iran) has a Shia ideology which is evolved from conservative Wahabism (entrenched in Saudi Arabia) and therefore malleable. Another fact is that the rulers of KSA are trying to steer their countrymen away from the stranglehold of Wahabism. The clerics very reluctantly gave in to allowing KSA women to drive. Women have their representation in parliament - a fledgling institute under the protection of the rulers.
