is effin hard to do!!! I've been 5 days with no smokes then tonight I started drinkin some vodka and I gave in to the urges. ohwell ohwell
It's so friggin hard to quit even though I hate it. I hate the taste, I hate the cost, I hate the dangers involved, yet it's insanely hard to stop!!!!! For the last five days I've been using peppermint candies and push ups to fight the urges but alcohol makes smoking irresistable. Are there any others out there with a similar problem? If you have some good advice on how to quit without spending tons of cash on patches or whatever please give it to me. I know there will be responses saying "just quit and its mental, blah blah blah" but seriously, it's hard.

YES! I know, it totally sucks. I'm going to quit in about two more weeks...just kind of a mental prep time. You have to smoke and really think about why it suck EVERY time...when it seems like the cig takes forever to smoke and you've really got it associated with negative, than you quit. A friend put it to me this way once...how much sense does it make to buy something that you put up to your mouth, inhale, and blow out and it's gone...nothing to show for, bad for you, bad for the air and those around? Anyway, that's what worked for me, and yeah, I smoke again, but months later and only because it was a revenge tactic lol...so I gotta put myself through it again...smoke til you're sick.

Brother I KNOW your pain! I smoked for MANY years..end of this month, 2 years NO SMOKING!

It took me 7-8 tries and I was able to use the patch to FINALLY stop!

There are usually two different types of smokers, one of "habit" the other of nicotine addiction. I was an ADDICT! I did not have to do the "habit part..just the nicotine in any shape or form and I was fine..otherwise I would get "withdrawls" including the shaking, etc..it was nasty.

So you CAN do it, just find the way that is right for YOU! I started on the largst patch and still smokes 3 cigs a par for a pack, then just on the patch. i was on the patch from Dec 31 2005 til Easter 2006. Then finally was able to get off the patches. So do not rush yourself..take it at YOUR pace.

The urges can still be there and it take a LOT of time. I still get some from time to time, but they are short and controllable. But it can be dine!

Best of luck, I know its a tough fight...but you CAN do it! bigsmile

Thanks all for the input so far. Don't you wish you could just go back to when you were a kid thinkin about how nasty the smoke was and just not pick it up? I admit that I started because my friends were doing it and I just fell right in (everyone is guilty of peer pressure to some extent so don't hate) but now I wish soooo much that I could have just blown it off. Maybe I'll look into the patch. When I was in the army I would dip Copenhagen and it calmed me enough so that I didn't need to smoke... but now I think that dip is nastier than smoking so I don't want to fall back into that. I may end up trying the patch after what you said, "Sumthingdifferent". Hopefully it will help. I WILL win this battle I promise. But the booze hurts... and I won't stop drinkin on the weekends... ohwell

Studies show, even after 40 years of smoking, after a full 1 year of non smoking, anything wrong with you (Breath skin yellowish, same with teeth) Will disapear...unless you got cancer of course. but after 1 year. it will be like you never smoked again. so keep trying. but dont be all parinoid of the dangers.

Hey Munch, I feel ya on this subject. I had pnemonia last month and didn't/couldn't smoke. Hell I couldn't breath. Well, I quit for almost 4 weeks. Then all of a sudden I bought a pack and, well, end of story. It is the hardest thing for me to do. Everytime I try or do quit, I start right back up. There is medicine called "chantix". I know lots of ppl who have quit using this. I'm thinking about trying it myself. Just have to see if my ins. will cover it first. So, don't feel alone, I'm sure we're not the only ones in this boat.

To stop smoking, move to a difrent house. wash all your cloths, bleech your teeth, and go cold turkey, without all the smell sences going off to help with the lust for tobaco. it will be so much easier. of course. this is expencive, its just what my mom did when we moved to MN. without the smell. its so much easier.

Wait, so you just figured out that alcohol makes your cravings unbearable, but you still don't know what to do about it?

Isn't it rather obvious?

i smoked for about 6 years and tried to quit about 20 times. So when i did finally quit i knew what i had to do.
Can't drink around smokers, I knew I'd be in a bad mood for weeks so I kept to myself much as possible. I was irritable for about 45 days and just laid low.
It's been 3 years without a smoke and i still get the urge when i drink around people who are smoking, but the addiction is gone

thats awesome jox. sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and take it, it leads to a happier life. you get energy back and such. I used to smoke a lot, not due to niccotine though, i just have an addictive personality. =/

Ex girlfriend? Try soon to be ex wife. We're still living together and she chain smokes lol. If I think about her I'll be craving one. I get all antsy and anxious whenever I don't have a smoke... it's very physical. That's what's hard about it.

Ok, yes it's obvious that I should probably quit drinking... but I have no desire to. I reckon that means the battle is already lost, eh? How the eff can I NOT drink on the weekends? Hmm.. maybe I could become a volunteer designated driver for a month and see how that goes. *shrug*

well when i got frustrated when i couldn't stop smoking, I just enjoyed the times. drinking and smoking isn't healthy but i had some great times, a buzz and a drag with buddies and friends, kicking back is a great feeling
