Topic: KILL "Old"

I might be "old" but my memory is still pretty good.
This is an "old" topic because as I recall, you already posted it awhile ago and got pretty much the same replies you are getting now.

Some of us get "older" and wiser and some of us just get "old".

Gerascophobia is an abnormal or incessant fear of growing older or ageing.
Gerascophobia is a clinical phobia generally classified under specific phobias, fears of a single specific panic trigger.

The word Gerascophobia is derived from Greek 'tha geraso' which is a phrase that means 'I am getting old' and phobos meaning dread or deep fear. To an extent, most of us are afraid of growing old. No one wants to lose their youthfulness, develop wrinkles and face other health problems that are inevitable with age.

Onomatophobia is the fear of hearing a certain word or of names. The origin of the word onomato is Greek (meaning word) and phobia is Greek (meaning fear). Onomatophobia is considered to be a specific phobia.

Graphophobia is the fear of writing or handwriting. The origin of the word grapho is Greek (meaning write or draw) and phobia is Greek (meaning fear). Graphophobia is considered to be a specific phobia.

Scriptophobia is the fear of writing in public. The origin of the word script is Latin (meaning write) and phobia is Greek (meaning fear).

There is help if you want to find peace and contentment as you get older and older.

While we're coddling people's widdle feelers,
let's eliminate the word BALD.

I don't mind having 2/3 a head of hair.
I just don't like being reminded, that I still have
to pay full price for a haircut.

And, what about the word "TALL"?
Now, I'm well within the top 7% worldwide,
when it comes to height.
But, as I think of my vertically challenged,
'people mcnugget' friends... Doesn't the word
"TALL", remind them, they're not?

THROWING OUT 'OLD AGE'

Quote from technovative

".....reevaluating the more negative perceptions of what old means....."

Me: YES.
And so a 'dating site' COULD get rid of a pretty sensitive-to-some, (and entirely unnecessary anyway), "*****-word" !

p.s. It's said that there's a fool-proof cure for "old age".
Celebrate one's birthday everyday when (surprisingly!), waking up.....and wallow in the thoughts of all the presents one's certain to get.

The problem here is your choice of context. "X years old" has a much different context and connotation than "old fart" or "old geezer". Your problem really isn't that the word "old" is offensive. It's that the context in which some people use or interpret can be negative, demeaning, and/or depressing. Therefore, the problem isn't the word but people. But people aren't going to change just because somebody else wants them to. In fact, they'll only resist the change that much more

"""....(and entirely unnecessary anyway).... ******-word" !"""

I object to the removal of the word "******".

How's that for a twist!

Glad you mentioned 'tall'. YEP. That has to go also. In my case, describing myself as only 5 feet 7 inches TALL is ridiculous. I use 'long' so as to avoid being laughed at, shamed, embarrassed, put out, made to feel small, exposed......well, you know the rest I'm sure.

Be a pioneer Mingle2!

As a friendly gesture to your clients, delete the word 'old' from your superb site.....ENTIRELY. Why? Because it's offensive. Plenty of women protest (quite rightly) that they're not as old as their, um, billing indicates!!

I should think not too. These days, WHO IS?!

Yes, the number can serve as some sort of an indicator; but surely if we see JANE SMITH 29 YEARS, or even just 29.....isn't that enough? Why "OLD?!!"

Be daring Mingle2. Give it a shot.

keithpl2

Sounds very much like you have a problem with being old. Why not 'kill' your own negative connotation with the word "old"? Problem solved.
These days you sometimes see men state "I'm XX years young."
To me that says the man has problems with aging, which I don't find attractive.

Instead of saying you're old we can say you look like you have first hand memory of the resurrection.

Quoting me to someone:
""Glad you mentioned 'tall'. YEP. That has to go also. In my case, describing myself as only 5 feet 7 inches TALL is ridiculous....I prefer LONG""

So as you can see, it sounds
as if
I have a problem with THAT word too.

It's heart-warming to get such serious advice from all these people who've spotted my problems. In fact they respond so earnestly - and are sometimes generous to the point of effusiveness - that I feel the world's a pretty smart place after all.

p.s. I've got a lovely list of JUNK WORDS I have problems with too. Anyone want to examine them?

Ah, what a pity gentlemen; and I'd been looking forward to so much fun. I'm afraid you're much too serious for me.....or perhaps I should say that you take yourselves much too seriously for me.

So much so, that in fact only one of you in this exchange, actually 'got it'.

Defeated, I shall have to crawl back into my hollow hole, and nurse my seared sensitivities.

But then all religions are defended with trembling passion, are they not; and the human word surely is, is it not, SACROSANCT.

I mean.....how could anything possibly be wrong with it?!

Oops. Terribly sorry. I think I almost strayed into an inappropriate department....

Chillens! At ease.

I do believe, the stuffy gentleman,
just pranked all of us.
laugh

The dryer your sense of humor,
the easier it is to see.

Kudos, OP!

Long sounds like a measurement for a coffin. How about High

Without body language, humor and sarcasm often don't translate well to the internet. Since the vast majority of us aren't expert satirists, we invented emoticons and emoji to convey what words alone cannot.

If this were the only source, maybe but this is not the only time he has posted issue with words.

describing myself as only 5 feet 7 inches TALL is ridiculous. I use 'long' so as to avoid being laughed at, shamed, embarrassed, put out, made to feel small, exposed.

Why use anything at all?
5 feet 7 inches says everything needed.
57 years says everything needed.
Using long or young is equally worthless so why favor one word over the other? Why have issue with either unless there are self-esteem issues driving the predilection?

This is merely yet another thread that tries to insist that other people act according to the OP's preference.
More Narcissism.

WOMEN OF THE WORLD COME FORWARD!

But before I go into that, I agree with you; and could resort, (once again), to Voltaire's, "...les mots: la source des malentendus....". I might wonder how many unfortunates have broken off communication in Mingle2 because of misinterpreting, say, a nuance.

BUT if more women entered THIS stream (oooops; have I just hurled a cat at certain pigeons?) - and I don't mean MINI-MEN, the so-called utterly emancipated and (you have my permission to use this word), equalifacted version of woman.....but those with their own VERY FEMALE-AND-I-HOPE-PUZZLING-TO-THE-MALE mode of expression, with an unassailable resistance to all forms of crotchety, (see previous entries), prickly, (ditto), aggressive, (ditto), and hysterically self-defensive MALE-BORN protestations.

Does this writer have an obsession with 'words' perhaps?

Not when I'm loving, composing music, playing Squash, eating Indian food....etc., etc. But on these pages, I've seen that indeed I do. And it's growing!

COME FORWARD FEMALES OF THE WORLD.

I predict the women of the world aren't going to line up for you. It will have little to do with your age or height.
