...with our health care system. Insurance companies have a stranglehold on us. Did you know there are people who's job is to look for reasons to deny health coverage? That's pretty appalling... when an honest, tax-paying American is stuck with a mountain of debt, just so they can live, because an insurance company is too cheap to pay for a surgery or treatment. What need do we even have for them if they aren't going to pay out? There are also bonuses for those who work for health insurance companies, when they deny coverage. This whole system is sick and upside down. Flat out Un-American. Part of the American dream is to be able to live healthy and prosperous, so what gives? There have been many criticisms of socialized medicine, most of them hide behind the fear of turning into a socialist country, but you know what? If medicine became socialized, it would erase many problems for the average American. My parents are both doctors, but they are in favor of socialized medicine. I'm proud of them because they don't refuse treatment to anyone, like an overwhelming percentage of other doctors do. Cuba has a better health care system than we do. Does that strike anyone as odd? All I know is I'm surprised there hasn't been some sort of social uprising by the American people on this matter. Most people are incredibly apathetic about issues like this, and honestly, it's going to lead to some pretty big problems down the road. People in other countries don't understand why we are so messed up here, how needing a life saving operation can bring on so much financial debt. They simply don't understand because they don't face those problems. Those problems shouldn't even exist. It's ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some crazy anti-American, in fact I served in the military after 9/11 because I was pissed off. I'm just pretty sick of our health care system and how messed up it is. I'm honestly thinking of moving to Canada or Great Britain, because they have a much better health care system than we have. Human beings have basic rights that should not be infringed upon, getting medical treatment is one of them.

Okay, rant time is over. Sorry it wasn't that good... I'm exhausted and need sleep. Working nights sucks.

What a great subject. Yes, our health care system sucks. I'm a single mom, have 2 girls. I have a decent job, pays pretty good, BUT, do you know how much I have to pay for health insurance????????????? It's ridiculous. Thank God my kids are healthy. It's so unfair. If I was one of those ppl with lots of kids and made little money, I could get all kinds of help from the state. Makes no sense to me. Those of us who work hard to maintain our lives, seem to always get screwed. grumble

the system will not change

as long as the insurance industry

has congress in their pocket

seat belt law (lowers insurance payout)

anti smoking ban (this one may back fire)
(if it was really for clean air at work place
air purification systems would work)

just wait coffee and chocolate will be next

I think the reason the insurance companies have the market cornered is that they operate asa cartel i.e. opposite of free market.

If the market was realy free, you would have companies offering insurance as cheaply as practicable. You could even set up your own insurance company in your own community.

I think big pharma has the FDA by the balls though.

It's also incredibly ridiculous when you have an outpatient minor surgery and the operating room fee is $5000 for an hour! That's robbery!

I happen to be married to a Canadian(not very happily, but that's another story). As such, I have spent a lot of time in Canada and know a lot of Canadians. The differences between the US and Canada are a frequent topic of discussion.

I haven't spoken to one Canadian who would trade their system for ours. Bottom line is that our US system is badly in need of repair. Be it public, private or some combination, we should be able to get everyone covered. I would hope that everyone would agree on that.

I agree, our healthcare system in the U.S. really needs an overhaul. For a single mom like me who doesnt make alot of money, it's very hard. I make too much money by their standards to receive help with mine, and my sons healtcare, but after paying for it myself, barely have enough to live on...

Something definately wrong with that picture..

You are a classic example, blonderocker, of what needs fixing in our system. A friend of mine suggested that we take away the healthcare plans of the president and every member of congress. And they could have it back when they figured out a plan for the rest of us, too.

hmmmmmmmmmm as far as the canadian health care goes......it doesnt suck.....it is far superior to any american health care I received while living in America. Why do you think they try and recruit doctors and nurses from here??? Because they are better trained...

I remember while living in america they wanted me to pay $200 a month for healthcare for myself......and I wasnt supposed to get pregnant for at least 6 months......well oopsy I did get pregnant!!! Well it turned out, I was having a miscarriage....of course my healthcare hadnt yet kicked in.....so they sent me to a poor "gunshot" hospital where I had to have a D/C.....no drugs.....nothing.....I was awake!!! I would never have had such treatment in Canada!!!!grumble grumble

I noticed even the girl who did my ultra sound was a joke.....Im like wtf? you just learning to do this or what?huh grumble explode
