A recent post inspired me to create this one when the poster asked that we think for ourselves.

I don't have a problem thinking for myself, but I do have difficulty coming up with topics that haven't already been posted or overdone. It makes me wonder if there's really such a thing as a "new topic". Much like movies, it's basically the same thing over and over again, just a different version of it.

Does anyone else have difficulty coming up with new topics?

What are some of the topics you'd like to chat about or discuss if given the chance? And what stops you from starting a new topic thread when you don't see the topic you'd like to discuss or chat about... other than it being a PG13 site that is, haha!

Edited for typos.

I cannot opine on the new topics because I never make any,
so I have no right.

But when someone comes up with something NEW, it is wonderful
and you will see everyone flock to it.

It is VERY difficult to come up with a topic untouched
in these forums, kudos to anyone who can ;-)

I wish they brought back the Sex&Intimacy forum, it was fun,
alas, sponsors rule.

Sometimes the funniest stuff is posted in Help but then is
immediately deleted for chattering, not allowed in that forum.

I would like to be able to chat about anything, new information
dontchaknow, but bow to the rules for keeping it civil and
available to everyone.

Yes, that would be nice if they brought back the sex&intimacy one, I wasn't here for that. But I can see why it might have been taken away.

I'm not complaining about topics being the same ole thing, and don't have a problem creating a new thread, I'm just struggling to think of something new. I can think of similar topics, but if it's too close to another topic, it gets locked and redirected to the one that's already in motion... understandably so!

I see a lot of imported topics, from other sites..I
always wonder how many times they played on that site ;-)

Part of the reason 'new subjects'(topics) are not discussed is because not all the forums are view-able to all members.
Plus, members have the ability to turn off the forum feeds they don't want in their feed.
For example, I have the "Games" section turned off.

Another thing many don't realize is the 'view' is limited unless you page thru the archives for each forum.
Most use "Recent Posts" or "My Topics" when they visit M2 forums.
There are plenty of interesting topics that have drifted out of 'front page view' from inactivity or some other reason.

Then you have the "Moderator Locks".
When members get nasty because they can't control themselves to post within forum rules, threads get locked.
The thread topic might have discussion left but that topic gets flagged as too hot for M2 focus. No new threads on that topic are allowed for a period of time.

As to the nature of Dating and Relationship topics they are pertinent on this site.
Threads that are too close together on the view list are stopped but people are always coming and going at this site.
Old topics have updated views and new people participating.
Those 'common topics' give a view of how the dating world changes over time.
In this case, New is not as important as Pertinent.

That's a good question.

I've searched google for topics to use in dating site forums, a lot of the topics are the redundant ones that show up here. I suppose I could look at other forums for some ideas. There's plenty of them out there, other than dating ones that is.

Humm not sure how one came to that conclusion..

If a thread gets locked and it all depends if the Topic it's self is against the rules or not... If the Topic is the issue then right it is best to leave it off the forums.. If it is due to a few members that can not seem to hold their tongue and the thread has gone to the point it can't be cleaned up then it is locked or deleted..

We don't flag any Topics and have never limited how long before the Topic can be discussed again if it was locked, as long as it is within the Forum Rules it may be re-posted again.~~whoa

I don't have any of them turned off, even the ones I'm not interested in participating in, like politics and religion.

Going back to older posts is a good idea, thanks Tom.

Even though there's all kinds of people on Mingle forum the scope is limited. I think that's why you get the same stuff over and over.
My own scope is limited too btw, more than half of the subfora I never read, hihi.
In general I don't think it's so much about coming up with something entirely new but more something that fits on Mingle forums. There's an audience for everything.
As you know I'm very much into and busy with energywork and spirituality. I don't really post about that here. Not the right place.

Some people might have realized, I keep it on a low level. The odd joke, I throw in, and the odd comment here and there.

Well, I have an opinion, which is sometimes controversial. And thanks to that condition I was diagnosed with, I have my difficulties, communicating, expressing myself, etc.

Okay

I have seen threads get locked because "This topic has run it's course and will now be locked"

A while back for instance; the Gun Control thread.
It was locked (reason was posted by the moderator) because it had run its course.
If someone would have immediately posted another gun control thread, would it be allowed to continue?
But, months later a new gun control thread popped up.
People who posted on the old thread posted on the new one.
Its obvious there is still discussion on the subject.

Just so you know, my comment was not against the moderators.
I have been a moderator and admin at other forums and I completely respect the job y'all do. (Thank You)

Good point Crystal. And the audience does matter as to whether the thread will stay active or not.

Thanks for commenting Larsi. I have difficulty expressing myself at times too, and it often comes out awkward... which is why I sometimes shy away from starting new threads, and initiating conversation.

I think you both express yourselves very well. We all see faults in ourselves that others cant see.
You could have startedd a topic frenzy River :)

A simple social study...

Pick a forum.
Go to the earliest thread you can read.
Find all threads on a given subject.
Read those discussions and see how the discussion changes over time.
Note the participants and watch for replies from them and see how their views on the subject changes over time.
How many similar topics have multiple pages or multiple parts?
These are the topics important to the community.

I run a horror movie/TV show forum.
Primarily horror but delving into all speculative fiction.
Most have a few hundred views.
There is little participation.
I use the view count to decide what new films or shows to feature.
Thing is, on this primarily horror forum, the thread with the highest view count is Christmas movies. 13,000 views and rising.
I see high activity in the kids and family sections.
Understanding my visitors interests, I post more threads in these section, even tho it is a primarily horror forum.

If you look at the highest topic activity here you can get an idea of the subject topics people want to participate in.
Its not so much new topics as it is pertinent topics.

Tom4Uhere, I'm the one that usually post saying a thread has run it's course prior to locking it.. In no way do I mean for it to be taken that the Topic can not be re-posted.. If it is that bad the whole thread will be deleted instead...

It is mainly due to it had went 2-3 pages of arguing before anyone decided to report it.. We don't look at all the threads/post so we rely on members to report when there is a issue. It helps if they report when it first starts going bad, so we have a chance to take out what needs to be and let the Topic continue..

But if it is going to take a lot to clean it up, sorry I will lock with the explanation the thread has run it's course..

Many times when we do that we even e-mail the OP to tell them why, if it was not their fault it went bad. Letting them know they are welcome to start a new one but to report any arguing as soon as they see it..

Yeah, I see the logic.
Moderating a social forum like this one has got to be tough.
Many different personalities.
Yer braver than I.
