Wonder what will happen. Last season, there were those two London games that were a big success and they were going to do it again this year. I don't see that happening.

Baseball may start again by July 4. It's the American sport.

This summer was going to be the "field of dreams game" in Iowa. It was going to Yankees and White Sox. That's not happening.

I don't understand why more people are concerned with basketball than baseball.

The revelation of the Steroids era played a big part.

The one draw that made baseball unique was the fact that you could measure greatness with some semblance of consistency throughout the entire history of the sport. No other sport could say that truthfully. Once it was revealed that most of the records and recent achievements had completely warped that aspect, a large part of the traditionalists and purists walked away. Now you only really have fans in the specific cities where the teams reside, with a few outliers here and there.

Furthermore, the sport in itself is more complex and dependent on a team dynamic than sports like basketball or even somewhat like football. The sport is more difficult to master and is not a one-n-done league where kids can immediately jump to the majors after 1 or 2 years of college. Without that quick wallet-fattening opportunity, kids gravitate to other sports. Finally, it is one of the few team games that actually needs to have a large set of players. You can always play 2-on-2 basketball or a 5-on-5 pick-up game of football but you need at least 14 people to make it worthwhile and 18 to do it right. Moreover, you need a large section of field, with equipment, to pull off a game which makes it difficult for city kids to get a pick-up game together.

You are making baseball more complicated than it is.

"A good friend of mine used to say, 'This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.' Think about that for a while." - Nuke Laloosh

There are other things that detracted from the game incrementally. The '94 strike was another big factor. The dilution of the league through expansion. The inequity of the league between the Small and Large Markets, ticket prices that rocketed up exponentially and the constant talk about small-market teams moving to the next bigger, better deal all played a part.

But I think the biggest detractor is that people today just don't have the attention span that your need to really enjoy the game...It's a slow-paced event where every pitch plays a minuscule part to the overall picture in a season of 162 games. It's like watching a glacier grow or a stream's inevitable change of direction as it eats into the bank of a turn. I understand that "chicks dig the long ball" but sometimes a simple pitch-out is even more monumental. Most people can't grasp that...and so they miss out on the beauty of the game.

"...It's a slow-paced event..."

That about sums it up.

I'm watching an old game from World Series 1977. Yankees/Dodgers. I can't believe how many of those players that I remember.

The baseball started late this season. While I watched the first few games, the players were so happy.

The Yankees win

bigsmile

I've been a baseball fan since I was 5. My first time to Yankee Stadium was a doubleheader in 1967.

The fact that you're a baseball fan is very endearing, Cat. smitten

Wondering if anyone is watching the play offs and this whole season. I was wanting to know if others are having trouble hearing the commentary because the fake crowd is too loud. I happen to have excellent hearing. I think they turn up the noise in the stands to sound real. I like to hear the commentary from the broadcasters. That is half the game.

I like local announcers since they obviously know the team better. I'll typically mute the national broadcast teams, anyway, so not hearing them is fine for me.
