What, y'all actually chat through the messages? laugh

It takes me 2 seconds to realize most are fake.. plus my messages are highly restricted, so not many ever come anyway. drinks

Lol, yes. 5% perhaps are real people. I don't restrict people from messaging me because I like to get to know friends from the forums. Otherwise I would. The weird thing is the fake messages are all the same, no creativity whatsoever...yawn.

Not me. When talking about here... I only ever talk to people from the forums.
I'm not here to look for love. Bit pointless since everyone is on the other side of the big pool or way too far to the east.

I was talking about a dating site where I do hope to find someone.

Well in a perfect world an immediate reply would be what we hope for but in the defense of the other person they may want to respond right away and maybe they are trying but due to a slow computer response they can't.

Goodness Stubeedoo, you are not a pretty woman, so you would not know how many emails we get.

I thought we were talking about chat, not sending mail or PM. Besides, a PC so slow that they cannot reply to a chat? In 2021??

What's this "Y'all" business?
Only one real person has messaged me on here, I've had plenty of Russian sex workers posing as Christian girls in Manchester though happy

The last "chat" I used that was real time on a BBS was in 1994.. met my second wife through it. I'm not sure any are in existence anymore.

Sure miss those days.. had a lot of fun and actually met some great people.. I'd travel from Nashville to Indianapolis about every two weeks to meet, hang out and party.

Yeah Crystal, chatting in messages and a computer is needed so if the computer is lagging it is not the fault of the person who is responding.

No one here has a PC nor internet that slow. I guess it's not the same everywhere.
Plus, most people these days internet on their phones. I don't cos of my neck. Some people don't even have a PC anymore because they do all on their phones.
So the slow stuff is in the past, over here anyway, and as such I don't encounter it with chat either.

Chat is a stream of real time responses, I'm with Stbeedoo, there are not many 'chats' left. Some youtube live videos have chat. That's all I've seen recently.

PM is private message. Its different from eMail because PMs maintain the tcp/ip connection. Connections are live two-ways (or more).
Email sends a one way connection.

The message system at M2 is dedicated eMail. Like a tiny version of gmail or outlook but very limited. Its not intended for primary communication over long periods. M2 is intended to be a locator service. Once a date or potential date is located, the next step is to make personal contact in the real world.

In the real world, its extremely rude to start a conversation with someone then just turn and walk away. Most people will close or suspend the conversation with some type of salutation. "Okay, See ya later", "Gotta Go", "Lets continue this later I gotta go do ...".
It happens so naturally we get accustomed to it. When writing a letter there is the salutation which opens and closes the letter. Most personal emails also have salutations. "Love Ya", "TTYL", that kind of ending.

Its called common courtesy and it speaks volumes to the couth of a person. It shows respect and leaves a definite impression.

It also depends on the importance of the conversation.
A short phrase back and forth banter is not going to need a closing salutation. If the next response is "Thank You" with a smilie, chances are the 'conversation' is over.

In "Chat" responses are real-time. In this eMail system responses are delayed. If someone responds with a well-written, discussion reply, it takes time to type it out, proof read it and send it. However, you can tell.
If there is a very long duration between replies and the replies are thought out, well-written and meaningful to the discussion its understandable but if the response is a single word, phrase or smilie, that person is likely shining you on.

In this world of instant communication, many people try to hold meaningful conversations using chat speak. Some of the younger generation don't know how to type out full paragraphs or they are too impatient to do so. These people do not want to read a conversation either. To them, it takes too long or is too much effort.
It falls into the mindset "I want it all, right now".

In forum responses, greetings and salutations are not needed. Replies on threads are not real-time live. They are like pieces of paper posted on a bulletin board. The term 'forum' is inaccurate but it stuck. A Forum is a place where groups of people gather to have a discussion. What we think of as a Forum is a Bulletin Board. The mark-up code used in forums is BB-code. The "BB" stands for "Bulletin Board".

Back when I was looking, if someone I was corresponding with disappeared for more than a day, I deleted the contact and stopped responding to their later messages. Unless they told me they wouldn't be contacting me till a later date. Its about courtesy and respect.

FB has chat that is used a lot by many, dating sites have chat, sometimes forums have chat, even Zooms have chat. And during a Zoom you're in a webinar with often 500+ people who also send chat during and in that Zoom. All live.
Even shops use chat to help customers, sometimes on Twitter, FB etc. but also on their own shop site.
You do realise this is not 1995 anymore, hihi.
And once you get to know someone and go off the dating site you go to WhatsApp to chat. There is no lag. None whatsoever.
And you can't even get internet anymore, nor a new PC or phone, that is so slow that you cannot even chat.

Anywho, if you want to argue the speed of internet, be my guest. I'm out. It's not what this topic was about. And I think NotLooking raised an interested point & question :)

I myself have a fast computer but if the server is slow or lagging as it does sometimes even my fast computer will be affected which can affect response time in chatting. I do not do anything internet wise on my phone since the screen is very small. I do text to others on my phone and I don't need the internet for that.

Difference in culture. No one texts anymore here. We use WhatsApp.

Tom, I did a quick search and was surprised at the number of BBSes still out there through dial up and telnet..

https://www.telnetbbsguide.com/

I haven't tried any listed to see if they're still up and running...
