As the uprising against Israel’s occupation and colonisation of Palestinian land and holy sites continues, many commentators have spent ample time analysing the methods by which some Palestinians choose to resist, rather than discussing the origins of the conflict and potential solutions.

Media coverage surrounding the Palestinian struggle for self-determination in the face of Israeli occupation often frames the narrative by equating the ethics of violence on both sides – but what does international law have to say about the Palestinian right to resistance? Does it fall short of providing an occupied people the tools to resist? What options do Palestinians have
It’s easy to feel like a broken record (for those of us who remember those) talking about Israel’s violations of international law. The list of these violations is seemingly endless and their condemnation by Palestinian, international and Israeli human rights organisations abound.
Over the years, experts, independent commissions, NGOs, the UN, and even the US State Department have documented the numerous and massive violations of Palestinian human rights committed by Israel; yet the violations continue and, arguably, have become more egregious, with no accountability to the victims and no repercussions for Israel.

Where is Palestine actually? I’ve looked at a lot of maps trying to find it. Going back hundreds of years.

From the history I read, before the current state from the 40’s, the British ran it after WW1, and before that it was part of the Ottoman Empire for about 400 years… The oldest reference I found was coined by a Roman general with a derogatory meaning.

So how far back in time do we go?

History of the Question of Palestine
At the end of the First World War, Palestine was among the several former Ottoman Arab territories which were made mandated territories by the League of Nations. The relevant provisions of the League’s Covenant (Article 22) referred to these territories as “certain communities formerly belonging to the Turkish Empire [which] have reached a stage of development where their existence as independent nations can be provisionally recognized subject to the rendering of administrative assistance and advice by a Mandatory until such time as they are able to stand alone. The wishes of these communities must be a principal consideration in the selection of the Mandatory”.
All but one of these Mandated Territories (categorized as class “A” Mandates) whose independence was provisionally recognized became fully independent States, as anticipated. The exception was Palestine where, instead of being limited to “the rendering of administrative assistance and advice” the Mandate had as a primary aim the implementation of the “Balfour Declaration” issued by the British Government in 1917, conveying that Government’s support for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”. This commitment was included in the mandate for Palestine, formally allotted in 1922 to Great Britain by the League of Nations, without having ascertained the wishes of the Palestinian people, as required by the Covenant.
During the 25 years of the Palestine Mandate, from 1922 to 1947, large-scale Jewish immigration from abroad, mainly from Eastern Europe took place, the numbers swelling in the 1930s with the notorious Nazi persecution of Jewry. Over this period the Jewish population of Palestine, composed principally of immigrants, increased from less than 10 per cent in 1917 to over 30 per cent in 1947. Palestinian demands for independence and resistance to Jewish immigration led to a rebellion in 1937, followed by continuing terrorism and violence from both sides during and immediately after the Second World War. Great Britain, as the Mandatory Power, tried to implement various formulas to bring independence to a land ravaged by violence. A partition scheme, a formula for provincial autonomy, a unified independent Palestine were all considered and abandoned, and in 1947, Great Britain in frustration turned the problem over to the United Nations.

Mia Schem, 21, described her ordeal in an interview with Channel 13 and reasoned why she wanted to open up about her experience.

“It was important to me to relay the truth about the nature of the people who live in Gaza, who they are truly are and what I experienced there,” she said.

“That I went through a holocaust,” she added. “Everyone over there is a terrorist.”

Schem said she was held by a civilian family in Gaza after being kidnapped from the Nova music festival on Oct. 7 and shot in the arm.

“Entire families are in the service of Hamas,” she said. “I suddenly realized that I was held captive by a family. I began asking myself questions.”

“'What am I being held in a family household? Why are there children here? Why is there a woman here?’” she asked.

Schem was recently released as part of a prisoner-hostage exchange during a temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

During her captivity, Schem was treated for her gunshot wound by a veterinarian, Israeli officials said.

If Israel had not oppressed the Palestinians, confiscated their property, and left them without rights, the Palestinians would not have resorted to resisting the occupation through fighting. So Hamas and others appeared. But due to strong Zionist and Western propaganda, it was able to portray Palestinian fighters as terrorists.
The Geneva Convention of August 12, 1949 emphasizes the need to protect civilians in time of war
UN Resolution No. 3236, issued in 1974, gave the Palestinian people the right to use all means to achieve their freedom and independence, including armed struggle.

Everybody should have the right to fight for their independence and freedom. To strike back against a perceived enemy is what most people would expect… but to kill, slaughter and rape innocent women and children that have nothing to do with their governments treatment of you is inhumane. Go after military institutions or government personal , but to attack innocent people makes your plight seem less credible…
