I know I shouldn't be surprised, but it still does surprise me to see so many adults using so many abbreviations when typing. I also know that some people will say that grammar/spelling/typing doesn't really matter on a site like this. However, I also see it in professional settings as well. I don't mind the occasional abbreviation, but some people really tend to overdo it.
So, for those who type that way, why do you do it? If I get a message on here full of abbreviations, I don't even bother responding anymore. |

well i do it. also cause ur limited words on a text so u try to fit it all in. i dont see nothing wrong with it. But to each their own

Never text-speak in a professional interaction.
Texting - I will shorten do to space or time. Non-professional emails - generally don't use text-speak. On the forums here - I generally don't use text-speak. |

It bothers me, too. These are message boards, not texts. You don't have to make these messages "fit" in the same fashion as cell phone texts.

I do not even use text-speak even when texting. I cannot stand it. Only time I will use it is if when texting I have one word to try to squeeze in I will look for ways to save space. But for the most part I will try to use proper punctuation and spelling. I only use abbreviations such as "LOL" or "LMAO".
I can understand why people do it during texts, but on a forum such as this one where space is pretty much unlimited it is not need. it just shows laziness and lack of care. These forums are representing you. if you cannot take the time to spell out simple words or phrases, why should I take the time to respond to you? |

I agree on a phone texting someone that's ok but anywhere else is unacceptable to me, that & slang/ ghetto phrases . I will not respond to it.

Even when texting, I don't shorten words. Mine just sends a second text if it goes over the character limit. Though, I can understand why people may shorten words for texting.
But other than texting? I just don't see the point at all. As I said earlier, the occasional abbreviation is fine. But much more than that? It would take me longer to type everything in text speak than it would to type real words.

It would take me longer to type everything in text speak than it would to type real words. When I text, I shorten words because of space limitations. In a place such as this, I don't do it. I try to put myself in the place of the person who is going to read what I have to say. And, more importantly, I don't want to be misunderstood or taken out of context, which what I have have seen happen with abbreviations. JMO. |

I got an email not long ago where every single word was abbreviated. It wasn't a long email, but still. I felt like I was reading something a teenager texted.

I very rarely will use abbreviations or text talk. I use to but now I am always using proper grammer and spelling. Espcially in emails whether they are professional or not and in the forums here. It's true that your spelling and grammer represents you. I can't imagine sending my landlord emails using text talk and expect him to take me seriously. If you can't take the time out and use proper spelling and grammer then it makes me wonder how you take care of yourself on a daily basis.

Proper spelling and punctuation are important. You can lose the correct emphasis on words if you don't use grammar correctly. I saw this in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago, maybe this will help folks understand the importance of good grammar:
A sentence without punctuation was written out like so: "A woman without a man is nothing" A group of men and women were then asked to add proper punctuation. Most men would punctuate it like this: "A woman, without a man, is nothing." Most women would punctuate it like this: "A woman; without, a man is nothing." So as you can easily see, if you aren't using the proper rules of speech, others may think you are saying something completely different. Just something to think about. |

Hummm well since I'm one that very seldom text even when I do I write the words out. I prefer to see the full word written out instead of having to decipher it.

My phone dosn't have a texting limit and i still use poor punctuation and grammer mainly because i text alot when i drive
 looking out for other drivers actually i can just talk and my phone is 99% accurate but id rather text

I never abbreviate, and I never use textspeak. I expect myself to write things out, and to spell everything properly, and I expect the same in return, although that's probably unrealistic.
I mean, how do you abbreviate "llama" or "parasaurolophus"? |

and I have much respect for it. The point being communication, shortening and truncating words can leave the message in doubt. I can see it while texting, especially if you are also driving a 5000 pound vehicle through traffic, shorter would be better. "i lv u n wnt b wt/u" simply does not bespeak the romance of "I love you, and want to be with you." I like the investment of time. |

I think it is just part of growing up. If they knew how it makes them look to most adults ... well maybe.

I read it as: "I live, you no want, be waiting, slash you."  Lot of miscommunication can happen there.
