In the profiles and email restrictions we see entries for "not married". Is that your spouse has left but you don't have the papers? You have papers that they left but haven't got a divorce yet? In the continuum from married to free-and-single where does the "not married" line get drawn? Are you having an affair if you're both "separated"?

From what I have seen over the years the definition is pretty fluid. For me it means you are not legally married. I have kind of a "So Sorry Charlie" definition that excludes those in the
"grey areas" of being single. I know it sucks rocks having to deal with being abandoned, poor and struggling to get a separation and divorce filed, and wait it out but it is part of being an adult and cleaning up your own choices. I did it and it didn't kill me.

AND it is being HONEST. If someone has a slightly shady definition of something that is so finite how am I suppose to trust them on things that really are significant to my rights and the responsibilities they would make to me? After all it is not like getting married is something you do without making the choice to do it. And if a person really isn't making the decision to get out of it then aren't they pretty much blowing smoke in my ear that "almost" single is good enough? I bring truly single to the table and expect the same.

You're right on. You make the decision to be legally married....make the decision to be legally un-married. It takes a bit of time and effort but at least cleans up the mess.

Officially, it's the relationship of a farm boy and a sheep.

I am not sure where this factors in but I am seeing more and more are people who never marry but have positive on going "relationships", sometimes raising children, with out the "paperwork" or even living together but they are family so maybe that is not married but it sure isn't not involved.

If you are separated, but have not gotten a divorce, you're still married.

I guess that's something we would ask the person if we were interested in knowing them

it could mean anything from single, to separated, to alone but still legally married,,,,,or even dating but not married

If someone is separated, they're still legally married, so "not married" would not apply.

but its not 'not legally married'

one can be legally married, but not actually have a marriage,, or n intimate and close union with another

Separated is still married. If someone told me they were not married and I found out they were actually separated, what they said would be a lie.
