So the other day a 47 year old woman was abducted at a rest stop and murdered..she was on a three hour stretch..alone..had a loaded gun on the seat ..went to the bathroom and got clocked on the back of her head and stuffed in her own trunk...hmmm.nuts..she left her gun on the seat...but let's say she had it with her..the guy came up from behind..kinda makes the gun useless in this situation..just sad how that played out..

Normally if a criminal sees someone with a gun they will think twice and take the next victim they want easy prey.. First thing in safety when traveling leave the rest stops alone unless it is one that is crowded.. Never stop at one that no one is around.. |

Never stop at one that no one is around.. ...could not agree more...I keep mine on my hip when I'm traveling alone...not so much when with other people..but it's always within my reach when we are road tripping...one thing about the land of the free..lots of people do as they please thinking that's what it means...lol..me I like the home of the brave...and brave I am...but I am also cautious...

During the early 80's our neighborhood had a series of robberies. Once was while the people were home. The next Saturday morning I was out in the front yard and saw a car (not seen in our area before) driving slowly around our (rural) neighborhood. It drove up and down at least three or more times. I proceeded to set up a table, chair, my hunting rifle (35 caliber), cleaning kit and proceeded in cleaning my rifle.
This vehicle drove by once more. Stopped about three houses up from my house for about ten seconds and drove away. Never saw the car again and, oddly, the break-in's ceased. Now I'm not "claiming" it was my action that discouraged the criminals but it's odd that the crime spree stopped immediately. I am tired of odd balls and crazies being able to purchase fire arms without a back ground check. This puts a bad light on the law abiding citizens of this country. All of my fire arms were purchased legally from licensed fire arm dealerships, I have a carry permit registered with the state of Indiana and they are locked up. I possess the only key. They're never used by anyone else unless I am present with them at a range. Always under my control. |

Must be a Hoosier thing, LOL While my daughter was living with me and attracting more than her share of scumbags ( heroin has become a problem even in small-town, USA ), I made it a point to patrol my yard at all hours of the day and night on an irregular schedule with my legally-owned semi-automatic AK-47 and a flashlight. Thus establishing to my entire neighborhood that A- I own firearms and know how to use them, and B-breaking into my house would not be a good idea. Several of my neighbors have been looted in the past, that also stopped. As above, I take my responsibility seriously, all my firearms are kept under lock and key when not in use, and I also have my carry permit and carry openly when I do. |

There's no real way to enforce laws against private sales of that type. Ask California that passes tax laws against garage sales yet can't effectively enforce them. Thus establishing to my entire neighborhood that A- I own firearms and know how to use them Owning a gun and walking around with it in no way proves you know how to use it. At best you established to your normal neighbors that there's some guy wandering around at night with a rifle and should be avoided. At worst you put yourself in danger since it would be really easy for a neighbor to simply see a shadowy character walking around with a gun and do something about it. B-breaking into my house would not be a good idea. At best you established that your house was guaranteed to have a gun, so it's simply safer to avoid your house and go to the next, you reduced the risk to criminals by pointing out where they shouldn't go. At worst you established to any watching criminals that you have an ak-47, something valuable worth stealing from your house, so it would be in their best interest to watch your house until they saw everyone leave. |

I'm not. But keep them out of reach of children in double locked safe. A unavailable weapon is useless. Try this scenario. You live in Chicago the Us most dangerous city with the strictest gun laws. This means that only criminals have easy access to guns. It is late at night and you are sleeping and you hear the noise of a window breaking downstairs and footsteps coming up the stairs. So now your "secure gunsafe, with a gun and a trigger lock are downstairs. What do you do? call "timeout while I take 10 minutes to get my firearm to protect myself?" Good luck with that. Keep the guns high out of reach of toddlers definitely. At about 8 or 10 years old start teaching your children how dangerous these weapons are and how to use them in the correct manner. That way the mystery of what they are is removed and they are no longer of any more intrigue than the furniture. Funny that Chicago had more murders with guns than Iraq this year. Andersonville Ga has lowest violent crime rate and handgun ownership is encouraged. Hmmmm (not sure that city name is correct) I read an article about 5 or 6 years ago about the town. |

Been carrying concealed for forty years, since the age of 21. It has prevented me from being assaulted on two occasions, plus I've saved two strangers, one man from being beaten and one woman from being raped. My under-car-seat pistol is a .357 SIG --93% of the one-shot stopping power of a .45 ACP, but the round's smaller cross-section means it is less subject to deflection by intervening wall studs, car doors et cetera, so less chance of missing. My personal carry piece, though, against conventional wisdom, is a Walther PP in caliber itty-bitty .32 ACP, manufactured in 1962. The slightly larger version of James Bond's preferred weapon. My theory is, the reaction of a gang leader, shot in the kneecap or liver with it, is going to be more persuasive to his followers than the utter absence of reaction if he were rendered instantly unconscious by the overwhelming shock caused by a .357, .45, or similar larger round. Admittedly, I have not yet experienced any situation where I can put this theory to the test.
