Anybody skilled in assembly can put computers together, or did you forget about the boom in computer technician jobs? These are only a fraction of factory jobs that are being outsourced, so why do you think that this is somehow gonna destroy our economy? That's fear mongering if ever I heard it. There are and will likely always be good jobs to be had regardless, if we break off from global trade we'll be left in a corner by ourselves, no technology to import and nobody to export to, all alone in a worse economic slump;^]

I live in a State that was very dependent on the timber products indigenous to the area...since well before we saw Statehood! Without the lumber that comes out of our mountains? Most of this country all would be living in clay huts!
Things were pretty good for a few hundred years here. For the most part, no matter what you did here... whether you had a job or not was directly linked to the wholesale price of timber and lumber, unions, etc..
Even the guy who cleaned up the lunch room in a mill was getting paid 18 bucks an hour, back in the 70's. Which is $95.00 an hour in today's currency!

Then.. A little bird came along. The dreaded Spotted Owl.

The next thing ya know.. Entire towns started to disappear. Economies were bankrupt... Businesses that serviced the mills, and the employees of the mills were closed.

You know the drill.. same story as any... whether it is steel, automobile..etc.

Many families suffered... While others chose to not cry in their beer.

My family chose to adapt. It wasn't easy but it was possible. While many of my highschool class mates were losing their homes and families.. I was working out of state. When I wasn't doing that? I was assisting in my families business... which was to bring more automation to the wood products industry. Reducing the need for unionized employees. We had to put up with a lot of crap in that too.. Physical threats, intimidation.. etc. Simply because we were facing the inevitable change while others just wanted to roll back the clock and make it all better. They were picketing for pennies an hour... We were making our work. Developing a new source of semi-skilled employment. Which also made utilising more renewable resources possible. That OSB board you use to build stuff? Was an invention that came from that time! The aluminum studs you might use? May have come from the relatively new aluminum industry we have here in the Columbia Gorge. Much of the computer you use today might be a product of the (once) farm land outside Hillsboro Oregon. The CAD software you might use to design buildings? Has it's roots right here in the town I live in..In fact, I know one of the original designers.
We went and bought as much surplus electronics from defunct mills as we could get our hands on. Entire control systems... Refurbished them, sold them to the mills that survived for a fraction of the price to buy new. Assuming the manufacturer actually still made spare parts... Most of the time.. when systems failed it would cause an entire retooling...forced upgrade. Which the owners were not willing to do.. closing yet, another mill.
We made a industry that sustained employment, created new employment. Even in your industry! You would not have been able to afford to stay in business if things did not go the way they went here. Lumber would be too costly!

All this, is as a result of people who faced the issue.. got inovative, learned new skills, created new industry.. and eventually put those picketers back to work. For much less pay then they were accustomed to... But a reduced wage based in reality is better then nothing.

If they (The Unions) had their way.. They would have forced ALL the mills out of business!

The only thing we as a Nation can depend on.. is change.

Picket all you want. Stand on a sidewalk and shout your lungs out! Place blame... Waste time and energy.

Or make your own way.

I'm not entirely convinced though.

What have you done to create new employment? How have you taken part in influencing change, taking a bad situation and making it better for your community? I'm not asking how many you might employ.. I'm talking about some innovative practice or business that spawns change for the long term.

What have you done? Other then talking about talking about it?

I've actually accomplished a fair share, being a guy that lives in my Mommy's basement, knowing just enough to be dangerous and totally argumentative, uncooperative as I am.

I've done it without a formal education.. without much training... I'm not too unique either. I just like to work and be paid a fair wage. I like to participate in my community. My neighbors do matter. My environment matters.


Currently.. The market is falling out of what I do. I have had a good run for about 10 years. However.. It is hard to make money in an industry that sells 250.00 to 300,00 computers. It is time for a change!

Because of my reputation.. I was offered an administrative position for an organisation that is bringing new industry into a local community. Bringing 250 jobs that will be paid on National averages, rather then local averages, which are statistically low. Benefit packages that rival government job standards. That alone will drastically change some lives. Mine included.

We will also be offering low cost/ no cost training and internships for the local youth, in trades and skills necessary to taking on this changing economy. Giving them active involvement in their community.

These kind of things happen as a result of doing.. not talking.

What are you doing? Why should any of us consider you as serious.. Why should any of us give you the time of day..let alone follow your lead?

Hey Bill, remember me? Being another business owner I have to ask you why do you engage in discussions with people that want to dictate rather than debate? You can't be trained as a surgeon and debate how to rough in basement plumbing with a plumber as much as you can be a business owner trying to debate business with people who THINK they have the slightest idea of what the hell they are talking about and are desperately (and embarrassingly)trying to prove to the world that they have the answers that we are all too blind to see. Their motivation is not from what value do they provide your company. Their motivation is what can they get out of you They don't share your vision...... Tomorrow when you get up LONG before they do looking at another 16 hour day, just smile and do what you do best. And if an employee decides to tell you they know how you should run your business just fire the a**hole so he has the opportunity to show the world how to do it when he starts his own company. Oh wait. Chances are he doesn't have the ba11s to do that or he would already be doing it.

i saw a neat show on wally world tonight. A town is fighting against thier store, which the people know will ruin not only thier view, but lots of local small stores as well. Anyone else catch it? Im not a wally world hater myself, but i respect anyone who stands up for thier beliefs against such a large corporation.
