She sounds like a total fruitcake; trying to guilt someone into a relationship. If I were in that position I would just move out and deal with any financial repercussions when able. If it was a sublease, then I wouldn't be obligated to pay anything; not usually allowed; like Texasgal said. You were just trying to help your friend with advice but ultimately that was his decision.
