I would also like to know if Microsoft Internet Explorer will ever support XHTML completely. More directly I would like to know if it will ever support the MIME type application-xml

If not then how do they expect to compete with browsers such as Mozilla Firefox which does support it.

Microsoft as far as i know will not support MIME or XML ever... Unless IE9 has it in development. I am not a Architect so i really don't know. But i know that firefox will not support ActiveX or .Net frame work so for now you will need both to do different things on the web if you run windows. The only people who WILL have major issues with this are the people in Europe who do not get IE packaged with Windows 7.

There is an free AVG but you can also upgrade and pay small amount. Norton seems to slow down the computer too much.

Well to start with, it is probably your PC that has the issue, as i am running Norton 2k9 on a P3 600mhz with 256mb of ram, and my machine flys.. no issues..

however, again, AVG will not protect against active Trojan viruses, or variant worms.. Thus i would just not bother with it..
I have tested about 30 different AV's...

The Tops for home..
Norton Antivirus 2009/2010 "360 was to much of a killer of system performance.
Sophos - provided almost as good security as Norton, but it isnt as polished..
Kasperski - Best protection, but a pain in the *** when it comes to configuring it..
Vipre - Strong performance, but not as secure, contains no firewall
Panda - removes virus, trojan, spyware, worms, but doesnt use the normal naming convention, so any manual removals are kinda like guess work.

Best for business
Symantec endpoint 12 - best.. hands downs..
Trend-Micro, Good protection, not great but provides a great reporting service to help track down where the virus came from
Vipre Great, and easy to modify to improve system security

Worst anywhere...
AVG - cant find worms or active trojans
CA-Etrust - no antispyware. firewall, and support is in india
Mcafee running this on an identical machine next to norton 360 it made this machine look like a p2.
Avaira - cant find trojans
Eset - if you thought norton slowed you down try this...

what's your take on NOD 32 - I find it's faster and easier to use, not a fan of Norton.

Nod32 is Good but not great, if you use Nod32 i would still use
www.malwarebytes.org to do occasional scans to make sure you are clean.. I have used Nod in the past and found it works well, on manual scans, but misses locked directories on its auto scan that should be scanned.. Malwarebytes will do this...

What is the difference and what one is best??

My 12 yr old wants an ipod or a decent mp4 player. All he wants to do is put music on it and walk around with it connected to his head like all the other kids. What a great x~mas gift this would be!

If only I knew whats what out there in techno land. Sales people only want to sell you the $300 ones! My eldest son says most ipods ...you have to pay for itunes or limewires. (like I know what either of those are) But I don't want to pay for songs or memory cards or gigabytes or whatever. He's probally gonna loose it in a month anyways.

He don't need it to take pictures , make phone calls or get the internet (If it did the laundry, that would be okay!bigsmile ) I did try a very cheap MP3 player last year ....that barely worked. He could'nt even d.l. music on it. I did research a bit but I don't understand all the techno garbo.

Any suggestions???? Helllllpppppp!

To be honest i might be the only person around who wont tell you to go Ipod, and not because they aren't cool, or anything else.. But because really? i mean 250 bucks for a 160gb mp3 player?
The electronics in the Ipod are about 15 bucks to buy, the hard drive is a 7200rpm laptop drive, which is usually about 50 bucks at most to buy... so their is 65 dollars... that means the white plastic is 185 bucks, must be pretty nice plastic..

I do however have a Sony Walkman..
It is a solid state drive, it is only 8gb but their are no moving parts which means if you drop it off a building it would still work.. (probably shatter the LCD but the drive would be good to go)
It has Tv tuner, Mp4 Mp3 M4A Mpg and Divx support, which means you can watch movies.. it also has FM tuner..
it was well under 250 bucks and its well worth it...
It will work with I-tunes, and will work with Windows media music transfers.. english, you can transfer cd's to it.. its easy to use, and can be used as an external storage as well, so if your son goes to a friends and wants pictures he can transfer them to it, or homework, or anything he wants... they make bigger sizes but for what i use it for, 8gb is plenty, after all that is 120 really high quality songs..

Simply put you have corruption... this is installer corruption.. either due to a virus in the past at one point, or an installation/uninstallation not properly done..

You can download the fix on microsofts website here:

The instructions and how it works is located here as well...

NOTE: once you download it,
You will want to run the Msicuu.exe program to clean up the issue..

how can i download anti-virus for free?

You really cant put a price on an anti-virus, but if you want a free AV i would recommend you just use a trial and then purchase..

AVG AV is free, but doesn't protect against trojans or flash viruses..
ClamWin is free but does not include real time scans...

Malwarebytes is free, but doesn't scan automatically
if you don't mind scanning manually weekly, this is the best one out there..

It can be found at www.malwarebytes.org

Your best Paid AV is Norton anti-virus 2009/2010
I would recommenced you just buy it, as for the best piece of mind it is the best out their..
Another Great AV is Sophos or Kasperski, however the best is still Norton.

Thanks Mark. But I have been told not to mess with the registry unless absolutely necessary. My virus scanner has both entries quarantined but the question is whats a good way to get rid of them.

Mark if they are quarantined, then you are fine, but if they re-quarantine on reboot each time, then there is an issue with them in your start-up group..

three things..
1. Download and install MalwareBytes - Best free AV out their
you can get it here www.malwarebytes.org
2. download and install ccleaner -registry cleanup utility, free
you can get it here www.ccleaner.com
3. go to start, then run, type in Msconfig
go to the start-up tab,
Remove anything that doesn't need to run..
you can find out if something is infected by googling the start-up name, you should get a process directory of what it is..
you can disable everything and just start-up your AV from here... Windows will not allow you to stop anything important, so it is basically idiot proof.. "not calling you an idiot" just stating it is setup that way..

Hope this gives you a good start for cleanup

BARLEY WITH ME AND I'LL DO MY BEST TO EXPLAIN,SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ME.[not very good with words]. I HAD A VIRUS ON MY COMPUTER AND A FRIEND'S SON FIXED IT,BUT HE ALSO CHANGED ALOT OF STUFF AROUND. HE PUT ALOT OF MUSIC ON HERE,THAT I WANTED TO PUT ON CD'S. THE THING IS THAT WHEN I TRY TO BURN THEM TO THE CD,IT DOESN'T WORK. I MAKE-UP A PLAYLIST AND IT SAY THAT IT IS BURNING IT ONTO THE CD,BUT IT WON'T PLAY IN ANY OF MY CD PLAYERS. HE PUT NERO SMARTSTART PROGRAM ON MY COMPUTER RECENT AND TOLD ME TO USE TO BURN MEDIA TO DISK,TO RIP CD TO HARD DRIVE USE WINDOWS MEDIN PLAYER.ALSO TO USE CD-R FOR MUSIC AND DVD-R FOR MOVIES.I DON'T DO MOVIES. BUT EVEN WHEN MY SON HELPED ME WITH THIS,IT SAID THAT IT WAS BURNING MUSIC TO DISK. BUT THE COMPUTER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE DISK.I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.DO YOU THINK YOU COULD EXPLAIN IT TO ME IN PLAIN WORDS,EVEN STEP BY STEP. I COULD DO IT BEFORE HE CHANGED IT.

What Operating system are you using?
2k, XP, Vista, 7?
Is it a PC or a MAC?

What brand of machine, home made?
if its home made what kind of burner is it?
if its name brand, is it a dell, or an HP?
Desktop or laptop...

Another way to do it is hit Ctrl Alt Delete
Select Task Manager
go to File / New Task
Once there type in regedit

Vista sucks..
You have to type in Regedit in the search then right click on it and run it as an administrator...

Ok...no more problem...don't know why though except my antivirus was updated and the problem went away.

Norton anti-virus some times does this, as a result of updates needing to access parts of your computer that Norton does not like..
In updating the AV, you more then likely installed a patch to fix this issue...
If you want to try to fix this issue, In the future, if it happens again..
Download and install Ccleaner
do the add/remove, and remove the updates,
Turn off automatic updates
run Ccleaner, it will delete the updates that are pending..
Reboot..
Go to microsofts website, install the updates manually..
Turn back on automatic updates..
Reboot..
Enjoy!

Do you want a laptop or desktop.

What the main roles this PC will have?

Just surfing the web, games, business apps, just learning?

It makes a big difference.

I don't need something that pricy to surf the web.
Yes I do download alot =)
I like to do everything for this pc but not to go over board on price
Once I make good money I won't have the need to ask what a decent pc is

i'm looking for a desktop with 4gig ram
if it handles games awsome but isn't a must
yes business apps and learning is involved

Ok well one,
Memory - Dont go bigger then 3GB if you are going to run a 32bit OS.. Microsoft windows 32bit will not see more then 3.96GB of memory, 4GB is 4048mb or 4.05gb of ram.. your wasting your money..
If you want to play games get an Xbox.. for the money, you cant beat it.. (PS3 still has no titles)
If you dont care about a service warranty i would suggest the same as the guy above, and going with Newegg.com or to tigerdirect.com or microcenter.com and just build your own..
If you are going to use it for school, and want something that is fairly cheap.. Microcenter does systems off business lease, which are generally less then 400 bucks and come with a 90 day warranty on all parts.. if you care more about the warranty, i would just stick with trusty old dell.. and get an external hard drive...

From the above posts... "Hardware Expert" hahahahhaha

If you NEED the MCSE to advance then good. If not then why?

Really, I've been in the computer industry for over 20 years. Yes, Zenith Heathkit, to Vic, TI, PC, Compaq... A+ certification is "ok" but WHY? These programs were developed to take "NO" it all to "know" it a little... LOL

Really, decide what it is that you need to get you from point A to point B. IF it includes any of the above then YES. If NOT then go to college and get a degree. NEVER skimp on the education factor in today's job market when the higher hand is held by a person with a college degree......

oh and yes, hardware expert..
Compaq Robotic Libraries..
Dell Systems
Hp systems
IBM Mainframe systems
DEC Systems
AS400 systems
Xerox Database systems
Printers
All-In-Ones
SAN storage EMC Clariion
SAN storage Dell Equalogics
Laptops of all brands
Clean room Hard drive recovery
etc..

LOL... Yeah there is the old "joke" MCSE... Must Call Someone Else..

As for college, i have still never stepped foot in a college, and i am working on security issues in Banks in NYC..
College degree in IT gets you no where,
Your still better off going all the way and getting your MCM,
but i still would wait till their is better documentation on it..

Also, again..
No MORE MCSE... It is expired..
MCITP is what you need to look into 83-640 (dont quote me on it)

I am sure this has been posted, but here it goes...

last night my antivirus program said i had a virus, bloodhound something..then i ran a system check, it showed that as an infected file and then quarantined it. there was also a trojan virus in there. i deleted both from the quarantine..was i supposed to?? it came up with a warning sign but i still deleted it. its not supposed to stay quarantined is it??

im a real lame-o when it comes to stuff like this...

any help?? drinker ohwell

I have been on the internet since Windows 95 and never have run any type of security or virus software and to this day I have never had any problems such as hacking, computer crashing,or any other computer problems. While living in Seattle(Microsoft headquarters)I met a few computer programers and the said the majority of those virus are in the virus programs you buy and of course when they expire that program releases all sorts of nasty viruses to make you think there is a ton of viruses out there to get you to buy another one. There is no doubt in my mind this is true.

Just use some common sense if you are not going to use any security.Never download anything unless you are positive you can trust the site.Never open a file from your E-mails unless you know for sure who sent it.I delete all temp files and cookies on pretty much a daily basis and do a disk cleanup every other day.Every few months I wipe out the hard drive completly and start clean. My computer runs very good by doing this.

I would suggest rather then doing this..
To save you some time..

Download;
Ccleaner, which is a small program that will clean out these files.. and clean up registry crap that gets added...
O&O Defrag - it is an NT4 spin off of a defragment program that will keep your drive running like a top..
And lastly, as long as you dont have a solid state Hard drive.. in which case you shouldn't use O&O either..
Go to start..
Run
Type in CMD
press OK
In the Dos box
Type in Defrag C: -b
the "B" is baseline, which will compress data to the outside of the disk and keep your machine running fast..

If you want ultimate performance specs i will add them too, but i would need to know what you are running... All specs..

But warning if its got into ur registry (happened to my dads computer and im in school for IT and networking and know a good amount) i recommend just first trying to reboot from last known good connection if its still there then just get a flashdrive put everything u need on it and just reformat your whole computer

Really?
I have years of experience with this, as i work with high end "Microsoft" systems with Banks, this option is not allowed, unless you want to spend days rebuilding a system.

1. Microsoft "last known good configuration" sucks.. I am Microsoft Certified, and i am telling you, turn it off, the correct way..
services.msc kill the system restore service, disable, also disable your indexing service, unless you do random searches on your machine for files, it is a total Processor killer...
The reason that it sucks, and books wont tell you, but virus providers will. It stores past virus keys dormant on your machine, if you had an issue, and you clean it out, and you reboot, you are infected.. as it is still their.. being infected by it doesn't require you to run restore..
2. IE8 Sucks, however, so does Firefox, your browser has little to do with viruses, but if you run toolbars, Ask, google, yahoo, mywebsearch(FYI this is a virus), those will infect you since they generate adds to populate the side bars of pages based on your search history. Also your home page has alot to do with this.. AOL.com is horrible for this, so is MSN.com as they run tons of adds.. Your safest search engine is google.. But not with the toolbar..

3. Your registry, in lack of better terms, is the backbone of your machine... If you have been infected, your registry is effected instantaneously, sparse files such as spyware generated by searching will infect your temp file which is a legacy directory in your registry.

4. Copying files to an external will not do any good if you have a virus, some viruses will infect; .mp3,.mpg,.avi or anything that can be executed. All your doing at this point is infecting your fresh build...

Proactive...
Malwarebytes.org great FREE tool that you run manually, it will clean out 95% of all issues..
Norton Antivirus 2009/2010 is a great way to stay safe, it will slow down your machine, but it is still the best...
AVG AV... if you have this, it will NOT protect against active Trojans, and you will never know your infected, well, until you Blue screen...
Trend-Micro - corp version is good, home version sucks..
Sophos - Good home AV, not as good as Norton, but from testing, it does a decent job..
SuperAntiSpyware - Good all in one tool to remove some tough virus issues..
Ccleaner - Requires a semi-advanced end user, but will clean up sparse files and make your machine run faster, and stay clean..
(If you have questions feel free to Drop me an Email, and i will reply with how to configure it here)
