I spanked my children, I DID not abuse them, spanking was a last resort and only used after I had talked myself to death trying to get their attention. All of them have grown into wonderful and caring parents who like me only spank as a last resort.

I think a smack on the butt is needed from time to time. Not to HURT the child but to remind them that you are in charge and to let them know that what they did was wrong. In today's day and age, sending them to their room with their TV or playstation, is not a punishment.

As a Head Start teacher I am dealing with children on a daily basis, some of them are tyrants who think they are entitled to do whatever they like to anyone. I see parents abused by their children on a daily basis and find very disheartening to know that NO ONE has any control over these children. I once talked to a parent about their child who hit me regularly and was appalled when the parent laughed about it. It really makes me wonder what is going on in these children's homes, and when did it become OK to hit your parents and teachers???

I do not think there is anything wrong with a little swat on the behind to get a child's attention...I don't consider that spanking. However, "spanking" is wrong. I used to know people from church (go figure) who believed in spanking. It made no sense to me, once the child was in trouble for hitting another child, she took him in the bedroom with a wooden spoon and all we heard was the smack and the cries. How does that teach a child that hitting is wrong?? I just never got it.

my cousin started smacking here child with a little smack on the bum, THEN it turned into child abuse, chasing her up the stairs with sticks, hitting her so hard it was shocking. ive practically bought up my neice and ive NEVER smacked her once, i dont believe in it, and here its ILLEGAL, and so it should be.

i have a great daughter very smart in fact too smart.. i have never had to but i do feel that it may work just to get her attention a lil more... so far a little raise of my voice and talking has worked but i could see a light spank would not be so bad... than talk about why after words of course...

Just what do u take away as punishment these days? I see my daughter struggle with ways to discipline her children. Almost every child in the US has tv or some other electronics in their bedroom, and how do you take away activities they are involved in that are supposed to teach them how to get along or play by the rules.

Everyone I have babysat for knows my policy. If it is just something like thrown stuff or making a mess, its time out, but if they do something that can potentially put their life in danger I will swat their butt. My dad yould leave marks on me as a kid, but I won"t, that is abuse.

" by spanking I mean a swat on the heiny, not a beating. Children should never be beaten no matter what they have done. There is a VERY THIN LINE between discipline and abuse and most of us know the difference."

We had spanking, belting, no dinner....
No, I don't believe in arbitrary beatings and abuse, debasement, etc. And it breaks my heart what some children endure and die from. But there are times kids can use a spank to get their attention and a slap on the face for absolutely disrespecting. Thank God, it's been very rare and they were quick learners!!
So, now I guess I'll get hate mail, huh??
