My wife and I never got the chance to go on a honeymoon due to the fact that she has anxiety attacks when she travels on the interstate. We would really like to take a couple weeks off work to go to Georgia (to see my brother since he couldn't make it to the wedding) then to Florida (to see my aunt since she couldn't make it either.) Here's where it gets interesting...My wife can fly just fine. It's the initial drive to the airport that is essentially impossible. Now we don't like doping ourselves up with medication, so does anybody have any good ideas on how to cope with anxiety during traveling?

The only thing I can think of is have her put music on her mp3, and blind fold her and tell her you are going to the corner grocery store.

Therapy, but that'll take a while. My dad's regimen was 2 valium and a scotch on the rocks, worked for him. I love to drive so other than that, I'm clueless flowerforyou

I love to drive too. Years ago when money was no issue for me (we won't get into details of how, but I don't do that anymore) I drove down to Oklahoma randomly for the hell of it, stayed down there for a week, spent some cash, and drove home. I drove there in one straight trip. 14 hours and 4 stops.

my niece is terrified of flying. she needs to be assisted on the boarding ramp prior to regular boarding

i know that OHIP (ontario health insurance plan) covered the fee for a course that air canada provides to help travellers who have a fear of flying. she's still afraid, but it helped her cope. might be worth checking with some of the major airlines whether they offer something similar

i'm afraid to fly. i find that if i board as soon as possible, i can usually get myself very close to a sleeping stage and use visualization therapy during the entire take off. once i'm airborne, and i see the attendants walking around, it's not SO frightening anymore.

i also ask for the aisle whenever possible so that i don't have to look out the window. i bring crossword puzzles, ipod, watch the movie they offer, anything that can take my mind off of where i am.

Start by taking very short rides in the vehicle. Let her build the confidence she needs. Then when she is comfortable on a short distance ride add a couple of more blocks. Slowly she should have less axiety. This will have to be done daily or she will be at square one again.

If all you're concerned about is the drive to the airport (and back), rent a limo. Going to the airport in a limo is different than just driving in a car...
