Topic: Democracy, Temporary in Nature

About the time our original thirteen states adopted their new
constitution in 1787, Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at
the University of Edinburgh , had this to say about the fall of the
Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier: "A democracy is always
temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of
government." "A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that
voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public
treasury." "From that moment on, the majority always vote for the
candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with
the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose
fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the
beginning of history, has been about 200 years." "During those 200
years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. from bondage to spiritual faith;

2. from spiritual faith to great courage;

3. from courage to liberty;

4. from liberty to abundance;

5. from abundance to complacency;

6. from complacency to apathy;

7. from apathy to dependence;

8. From dependence back into bondage."

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law, St.Paul,
Minnesota, points out some interesting facts co ncerning the 2000
Presidential election: Number of States won by: Gore: 19; Bush: 29
Square miles of land won by: Gore: 580,000; Bush: 2,427,000 Population
of counties won by: Gore: 127 million; Bush: 143 million Murder rate
per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Gore: 13.2; Bush: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Bush won
was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of this great
country. Gore's territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in
government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government
welfare..."Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the
"complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of
democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already
having reached the "governmental dependency" phase. If Congress grants
amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called
illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than
five years

"Number of States won by: Gore: 19; Bush: 29"
19 + 29 = 48 A total of 48 states?

Professor Joseph Olson must be using Fuzzy math because there are 50
states not 48.

or it could have been just a typo, but one little error like that is
enough for a liberal to discredit the whole message if it doesn't
support the liberal agenda.

I just did a google search and the number of states won by Bush in 2000
was 31 so all the states are now accounted for.

Was the US ever really a true democracy when you consider that it's the
electoral college that chooses the presidency and not the people who
actually vote?

Gore won the popular vote, Bush won by the electoral college.

It was the founding fathers who thought that American populace couldn't
choose who the president would be. So they instead placed a electoral
college to do so.

Garden, what you posted has been deemed credible by many historians and
philosophers. I read it often and when in highschool - MANY minutes
ago, I wrote a paper about it. At the end I wrote that based on the
history and the philosophy, that I felt I would see the beginnings of
the revolution in this country that would ultimately lead to the end of
the current political system. I also wrote that I would be sad not to
be here to see it's replacement as I believe it will be mighty. All
these years later, I still hold those beliefs.

One other thing, it was asked "is it truely a democracy", no, not
according to Plato. Perhaps it would have been better if it had been a
true democracy, at least the political caste would have nothing but the
peoples best interest at heart and not the wealth of their own bank
accounts.

I think you caught the fuzz math bug, Gore won 20, Bush. New Mexico went
to Gore.

don't blame me blame google. 30 or 31 the points in the article are
still valid, when liberals can't argue points the nitpick numbers.

Thats deep GF.

About the electorial vote! NY, NY has more the 20 million people. They
have different needs in life than say "me", In all of NC there is about
8 million, now if I dont want to live under the country of NY then you
have to have a system which works on a more proportionate system to make
it even out!
Now was that correct and comprehensible.

You liberals are so much fun to laugh at. If Gore took 19 states, or 20
states. It does not matter, he lost. When the system works for you then
everything is fine, however, when it does not work in your favor, then
someone cheated or there is a conspiracy or the system does not work
anymore. Too much fun, laughing at you.

A democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what we are going to have for dinner. A republic is by rule of law ,where one man can be a fortress standing up for what is right.
