Yet the Irvine woman was more curious than ecstatic about her daughter's find. After all, who would leave money in such a place?

"We just thought, 'This is someone's money,'" she said. "We would never feel good about spending it."

Rather than go on a shopping spree, the family called police and was initially told the money could be part of a drug drop.

Police later heard from store managers at Whole Foods in Tustin that an elderly woman had come in a few days earlier, hysterical because she had mistakenly returned a box of crackers with her life savings inside. In a mix-up the store restocked the box rather than composting it.

The Lake Forest woman, whose identity was not released, had lost faith in her bank and decided the box would be a safer place for the money.

Luckily for her, the box of Annie's Sour Cream and Onion Cheddar Bunny crackers were bought by the Rogoffs, who discovered the crisp $100 bills in an unmarked white envelope on Oct. 10.

The Rogoffs never heard from the woman and didn't receive a reward, but Rogoff did return to Whole Foods a couple weeks later.

"I asked them if I could have another box of crackers," she said with a laugh. The store obliged.

I'm so bizarre about packaging, I can't imagine buying a box of anything without looking at the integrity of the seal and a freshness date.
I think it's great that the people who found it returned it, but it's sad that they didn't get some type of thanks from the lady whose money it was.

Why can't people just do the right thing and not worry about a damn reward. If you wanted money, you should have kept the find.

Anyhow, too many of these stories lately. If I find some money, Im keeping that chit.

I've known several friends who have lost their wallets or purse, only to find it was returned in the mail.

These were happy stories in spite of the fact that the money was missing, because all of the other contents were left undisturbed. Several credit cards, cash cards, Id's and in one case even a passport were returned and even though all the cards were cancelled, no fraud was ever detected.

It's amazing how much of our lives we carry with us, how much of it is related to what we worry about the most, our money.

It used to be that the cards and other items were no use to the person finding the wallet so you often got that stuff back, as you said, in the mail. However today those cards and other items can end up costing you far more financially and in terms of agrivation.

They have said that we should never carry our social security card around, but many do carry it. I am supposing that the social security is worse than what someone can do with a credit card these days.
