How do you pull yourself out of the pit? I need some advise.

if you need wiring done you get an electrician

if you need piping done you get a plumber

if you need an appendectomy you get a doctor

if you have depression you should get a professional

not trying to sound mean but I dont know how and I doubt anyone else who isnt an experienced professional does either

See a doctor

if that doesn't help get on " happy pills"

Still, if that doesn't help join a support group

My outlet has been artistic pursuits. Depression sucks and dealing with it sucks even more. First of all you have to face it and deal with the seeds of it and then you can go from there. Coping with it does not solve anything. Putting up with another's depression usually requires tough love to make them a) realize they have an issue and b) it is unfair for their attitude to be inflicted on those around them.

Ultimately the thing is it takes strength to break the depression cycle. Face it, it is easier to deal with than PTSD!

1. dont lie to yourself about anything.
2. dont disillussion yourself in to anything.
3. Have great friends around you who are accountable, responsible, and carring kinds of people. They will be compassionet, but not let you off the hook.
4. counciling is great!!!!! even if your not depressed, its great to go anyway.
5. Realize you are stressed, confussed, hurt, angry or what ever. Own your feelings and then deal with each of them 1 at a time.
6. believe in yourself
7. believe in yourself
8. believe in yourself

I'm sure I'm not the only one here on these forums who deals with bouts of depression. My question is directed to them. I am wanting to know what helps them out of the blues.

I'm not interested in seeing a professional pill prescriber.

I use art as an outlet too. I'm usually pretty happy with a guitar in one hand and my gf in the other. We just broke up and now I'm singing the blues again.

a few things that have helped me...
i cry (it actually helps),
i write a journal entry, a poem, etc.,
i put on a favorite movie-preferably a comedy,
or i talk it out with someone, after i have said it to another person, i can glimpse a different perspective and

that really helps me understand why i felt the way i did in the first place...

i dont know if any of this will help but i hope it will ease your pain a bit....flowerforyou

These all definitely work. And, the comedies are great......laughter is the best medicine. But, most of all, I remember that "this too shall pass". I know it sounds cliche, but it really is true. Try to find things to do to distract you for now. You need to deal with the root cause of what's causing the depression as well, but that doesn't mean you should focus on it 24/7. One of the hardest things to do when you are depressed is doing the things you used to like to do. But, you have to keep going, keep doing them. If all that fails, volunteer somewhere where people are way worse off than you. A homeless shelter, a hospital, an animal shelter (animals are people too!). That usually helps put my problems in perspective.

And, don't discount medication completely. For some people it can be just what they need to get them doing what they need to do to get better. It's not the cure, but it can sure help you get there. Good luck to you. flowerforyou

I battle depression everyday. Somedays its really bad other days and most days its not a burden. But i know where mine stems from. I have deep emotional scars. Im all kinds of messed up. I wont go into details but i will say this not only do i battle depression i battle my will to live when things get really bad. Dont cope with it ever. Find someone who will listen that you can talk to. Having a support system around you will help.
