I do! I get more hungry when the weather is cold.
Does anyone else do that? Do we just need more fuel or what?

I think it may be more of a stress issue than a thermal one. At least for me, when I feel stress, I eat less. Now if the cold weather is not stressful to you, you may eat more. If you're super cold, and sensitive to the cold winds, then you may just curl up with a bowl of hot soup, instead of a huge meal. Just my thoughts.

I do but not because we "need" more fuel. Usually we eat more in the winter as a "comfort". It's cold, and rainy/snowy ... I want chili! slaphead I don't NEED chili but I want chili!! tongue2

A loooong time ago, we ate more for the winter to fatten up. Our bodies have evolved (obviously), we don't have to forage for food and we are sheltered!

The sympton to the disease of overeating in the winter is that we are less active.

I eat more soups and oatmeal, and I drink more tea. I never eat bread but my winter vice is sourdough bread!!

I workout a little more and try to keep my "winter padding" to no more than 2-5 pounds. scared I don't want to look like a big 'ol winter bear while I teach my classes. Lycra wear can be unforgiving.

The moral of the story: like pregnant women who think they are eating for two -- we do not need more food in the winter. Watch your intake! winking

Well, in our modern world of central heat, it may be more psychological, but in cold climates where people spend a lot of time outdoors, you need a LOT more calories to feed your body's engine. Inuit indians in Alaska eat thousands of calories of whale blubber, fish, and meat, just to stay warm. Your bodies heat has to come from somewhere and if your skin is cold, your bodies heat will flow right out and need to be replaced by burning food. However, just knowing it is cold outside and having the thermostat turned down a few degrees is not going to make a huge demand on your bodies need for food.

Sooooo... If you were dying to know the exact science behind this, here is how much food, in calories, is needed to heat a glass of cold water in your body.

"So in the case of a 16-ounce glass of ice water, your body must raise the temperature of 473.18 grams of water from zero to 37 degrees C. In doing so, your body burns 17,508 calories. But that's calories with a little "c." Your body only burns 17.5 Calories, and in the grand scheme of a 2,000-Calorie diet, that 17.5 isn't very significant.

But let's say you adhere to the "eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day" nutritional recommendation. In 64 ounces of water, there are 1,892.72 grams. So to warm up all that water in the course of a day, your body burns 70,030 calories, or 70 Calories. And over time, that 70 Calories a day adds up. So, while you definitely shouldn't depend on ice water consumption to replace exercise or a healthy diet, drinking cold water instead of warm water does, in fact, burn some extra Calories!"

I sleep more, wait...no, I sleep a lot anyway. I don't really do anything differently the more cold it gets, I think my heart grows a tad colder but aside from that I'm pretty much me.

Why does your text go all the way to the right when I quote it?

It's because you are related to bears. Time to get ready for hibernation. Careful where you doze off.
