Well, you're going to need several tools if you plan on doing the work yourself. Dig, level, tamp the ground, lay your base and begin. I would think any guy would be happy to show you how to do it properly and maybe let you borrow a few tools and maybe some muscle. Depending on how much you're laying, it can get tiring after awhile.
