I am not sure where the Government in the UK are heading with this one, but I know one thing.............. They are making money out of us quicker that we can blink an eye!!!

Not content with speed cameras, congestion charges, toll gate charges, council taxes, VAT, Income Taxes, custom duties on cigarettes and booze, VAT on shoes and clothing (unless you are shopping for your children) tax on luxury items such as chocolates etc, they have now added a new dimention to our television licensing................

In the early days we had three basic channels BBC1, BBC2, ITV ( for which advertising was a means of revenue) then we acquired Channel 4 ( again advertising paid for this)

The BBC does not advertise, so us mugs had to pay television liscense for the two channels (which is full of repeats) Now there is cable and satellite companies (Sky, Virgin) this service is not free nor cheap if and when you subscribe to it.

This meant that the BBC was losing out to the cable companies, but good old Auntie Beeb had another trick up her sleeve.............THIS !!!!!!!

"You must be covered by a valid TV Licence to watch or record TV as it’s being broadcast if you’re a tenant or lodger. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.

If you live in self contained accommodation such as a separate flat or annex, then you need your own TV Licence. One TV Licence may cover the whole house. However, there may be other reasons why you need your own separate licence, such as whether or not you have exclusive access to a toilet or washing facilities. If you are unsure whether this applies to your particular circumstances please contact us to find out more information.

It costs £142.50 per year for colour and £48.00 for a black and white TV Licence.

At one time a single liscense covered an entire house (regardless of how many rooms in the house) Not so anymore!!! Coming next, charges for the air we breathe!!!

In the US, we used to only have like 10 channels, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS and a few others. Now you can't just plug in a tv and have it broadcast. Anyways, we are forced to have cable, satellite, or a little conversion box. It's mandatory or no tv. We had to walk to school in 10 feet of snow uphill too and we didn't complain about it.laugh

What's an OAP?

I'm about ready to cancel TV altogether. $60.00 a month and rarely anything worth watching.

Nobody has to have a tv, internet or any other LUXURY to survive. There is a difference between need and want. You may want all those things, but you don't need them. If you WANT them, then you NEED to pay the appropriate fees. Unless you figure out that you really don't need to actually pay for them.

kind of sucks, but isnt it nice to go to the doctor or school and not worry about going bankrupt? I guess they have to be innovative in acquiring funds for certain benefits of being in the UK. Have they said how much the new license would cost?

In a country where the government is encouraging teaching via the internet and hoping to make ALL homes internet ready by 2012, I see no choice for most of us not to have these services. There are also plans to get rid of cheque, pension and benefit books, instead, they have made it possible for anyone (even those who have bad credit records) to have a basic bank account, these come with internet banking facilities.............. They are also promoting that we all do our banking online (to save paper) those who are on low incomes and on benefits will get aid enabling them to buy a computer............. See where they are going with the liscense for computers etc? It's a government cash cow!

They has also introduced more online learning............You need a computer to access your classes............ More money for them when they tax you.So it not a matter of wanting, it is going to be a necessity. Old Age Pensioners are being given lessons on how to use the internet to enable them to use these services to enable them to do their banking and shop online if they are housebound.
