NEW ORLEANS — Government officials said late Wednesday night that oil might be leaking from a well in the Gulf of Mexico at a rate five times that suggested by initial estimates.

In a hastily called news conference, Rear Adm. Mary E. Landry of the Coast Guard said a scientist from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had concluded that oil is leaking at the rate of 5,000 barrels a day, not 1,000 as had been estimated. While emphasizing that the estimates are rough given that the leak is at 5,000 feet below the surface, Admiral Landry said the new estimate came from observations made in flights over the slick, studying the trajectory of the spill and other variables.

Admiral Landry said President Obama had been notified. She also opened up the possibility that if the government determines that BP, which is responsible for the cleanup, cannot handle the spill with the resources available in the private sector, that Defense Department could become involved to contribute technology.

Now wait a minute....where the hell is Sarah Palin with her "Drill Baby Drill" speech?? And why the hell can't the Private Sector handle this spill?? Call in the government? Seriously??

F the oil companies! devil

Time for a "F BP and all the resta y'all" tax to cover this and future cleanups.

A retroactive tax on the last 5 years of profits. 30% income tax of the last 5 years worth of filthy oil lucre oughta do it. If we have to clean up their mess then they should pay a premium for it and I think that if we clean it up then we should get the rights to any further revenue from the rig in the future. After it has been restored we can sell it to the highest bidder or lease out its operation.

The well is supposed to have a shutoff valve that the oil company can't turn off, probably because the rig sank. They need to hire a submersible from one of firms that handles this type of work and ...

A. Confirm that the well has a valve still in operating order.

B. Turn off the valve or place a clamping charge on the wellhead.

The biggest problem at the moment is containing the spill. They may need more ships to haul skimmers than are readily available. The Navy could help out til some get transferred from Alaska, or Europe, or wherever.

Palin,, in relation to 'drill baby drill'

from wikipedia...

On October 2, 2008, at the Vice Presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, "drill, baby, drill" reached a new prominence. Joe Biden, referring to the energy crisis and McCain's 20 votes against funding solar and wind energy, stated that McCain thinks "the only answer is drill, drill, drill. Drill we must, but it will take 10 years for one drop of oil to come out of any of the wells that are going to be drilled." Palin responded by saying, "The chant is 'drill, baby, drill.' And that's what we hear all across this country in our rallies because people are so hungry for those domestic sources of energy to be tapped into."[

except that the average life expectancy was like 40

my suggestion is to convert to natural gas. 95% of all the natural gas we use comes from America.

Whew...I know a few guys at work that would contribute greatly to the "natural gas" industry!

Sorry....had to inject some humor...lol.

natural gas is a good idea,,,,

and before cars became so popular ,around WWII. lifespan was actually 60 years

in any case though, I was just commenting on how too much technology has actually made us worse off in terms of health, (family and community too, but thats another thread).

It just gets me how these companies F up and then the Fed Gov't has to get involved in the response. I am sure it won't be very long until they start blaming President Obama for the response.

And don't forget about all the health problems caused by plastics.

And the future problems we will be facing due to the fertilizers.

I remember when we were all being told how wonderful asbestos was.

Yea, McCain and Palin heard that Obama was hesitant about drilling and they thought it would be a positive point if they started saying "Drill baby drill"

Drilling is always environmentally harmful sometimes and places more than others.

We should be doing all we can to prevent this type of thing now and in the future.

And more importantly EFF BP! British Petroleum. It is time that colossal "accidents" like this will be tolerated no longer by the American people. I call upon everyone who is able to boycott BP. Do not buy their gas, or anything else this company sells. If you only have BP's in your town, there's not much you can do, but if you have other competing gas stations, use them instead even if they cost more. Lend no loyalty or patronage to BP. Shame on them.

Do you drive? Do you use a lawn Mower? Do you use any Atv's or water sports crafts?

You have to turn every post into a personal or political attack.

What I read about Alaska, there's really no need to drill anywhere else. There's enough there to supply us for the next 100 years. And that's just the known reserves,

Don't see anything personal in there.

And, well, this is a political forum...
