The Obama administration’s new approach to dealing with companies that hire illegal immigrants results in firings, not deportations, the New York Times reported Friday.

Instead of immigration sweeps at factories and farms which used to lead to illegal workers being shipped out of the country, the administration’s new policy—government conducted audits labeled “silent raids” by employers—usually only result in the workers losing their jobs, the Times said.

The Times article comes just over a week after the president delivered his highly anticipated speech on immigration reform, which was criticized on both ends of the political spectrum.

In these audits, federal agents examine company records to find illegal workers on the payroll, forcing “businesses to fire every suspected illegal immigrant… not just those who happened to be on duty at the time of a raid,” the Times said. This makes it more difficult for companies to hire undocumented workers to fill these positions in the future, the article explained.

These audits reach more companies than the Bush raids, employers said. This year alone, Immigration and Customs Enforcement have facilitated the firing of thousands of immigrants and “levied a record $3 million in civil fines,” the Times reported.

This current policy is a contrast to the Bush-era work-site roundups where undocumented employees were deported en masse. It also represents the current government opinion that treating the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants as criminals would overwhelm the system.

This ideology stands at the very center of the current battle between the federal government and the state of Arizona’s new immigration law
. Arizona’s law makes not carrying the appropriate immigration documents a criminal offense and gives authorities the power to detain anyone they think is an illegal immigrant. Several lawsuits—including one filed against the state by the federal government— are now pending.

Unacceptable. They need to be arrested, the people who hire them and know they are illegal need to be fined and put in jail and the company needs to fine them.

WHen we catch illegals we need to give them some prison time at a hard prison before sending them back and I am sure Sheriff Joe can find an economical way to do that.

the stand out word in this piece is 'suspected'...if it had read that companies fire all ILLEGAL immigrants,, I could agree that they be fined and the Illegal immigrant sent back home although I am sure this would fall under a totally different jurisdiction than an 'audit' does.


these audits seem like a great idea to me because money talks. IF enough companies loose money(which they do when they loose employees unexpectedly), the more hesitant they will be to continue such a practice. Remove some of the INITIATIVE for immigrants to break the laws and you wont just be putting a bandaid on a broken leg,,,,but actually decreasing the numbers who come and stay illegally.

There is a way for them to become legal, do the proper paperwork before entering the country.

Also if they are caught here illegally and deported they should be prevented form ever gaining citizenship.

There's already going to be hell to pay in November for the Dem's and 2012 will be a bad year for Obama.

The employers are employing illegal aliens not US citizens. US citizens are who we want to employ. If there is a need for the job someone else will open a business to fill the need, and maybe after a clamp down on businesses employing illegals, US citizens will be filling the job.

Nope, I also do not buy that whole "no child left behind crap" either! If it is property taxes as well as other taxes Americans have to pay to support our education system then there is no real justification to allow children of illegal aliens to take up our class seats. If they are paying for their education that is different. Since they are not, then they need to go home with their parents. They can then come back legally!

The scope of illegal immigration is exacerbating the crisis our nation's economy and debt crisis's problems. It isn't just the war we are involved in. It also is the bleed of Social Spending!

There are many Liberals who don't like the idea of Americans and Legals having a job an Illegal will do.

I have faxed Mr. hussein and basically just done that. I go through numbersusa where the faxed are all ready to go you just click a button. They also go to all your Reps and Senators.

They should when caught be sent to a rough desert prison where hard labor is preformed and have to wear pink underwear, basically like what Sheriff Joe does. A few years of that then deportation then NEVER being able to become a citizen will work. If we take away the jobs and make harsher penalties then they will stop coming.

I don't know, if they keep firing illegal workers, that means that illegals will no longer have jobs to "come across the border for." This should in turn lead to fewer illegals because of a lack of self support, and hence a life on the original side of the border would sound better.

As far as deporting them. Well, I sure as hell didn't pay to bring them here, why should I foot the bill to send them back. Once they are cold hungry and starving in America, a life back home might seem better. It's cruel yes, but it also sounds effective.

Of course they'll still come for our free health care. Thanks Dems. I can't get health care in this country, but the illegals can have all they want. So even without jobs, they have it better here.
