whoo, boy, this Canadian study sucks bigger and bigger one as I read it.

What do you mean, "17% more likely to die?"

I believe, and you scientist types can argue with me all you like, that everyone has 100% chance to die. Eventually.

The findings are ridiculously worded. Ergo, you can't believe a word of them.

What would have made sense is a categoricalization of findings in the following way:

average life expectancy of normals: XX years.

average life expectancy of BMI YY: ZZ years.

average life expectancy of BMI NN: MM years.

This would be still meaningless; a periodal breakdown of people's weights in their lifetime must be factored in to make the data less meaningless.

The more you read this stupid chart given by PKD, the less sense it makes, and now we've already entered negative territory (of sense) some time ago.

Over the 10 years of the study. The posted text isn't from the study, it's from the WebMD review of the study.

Overweight, Obesity, and Mortality in a Large Prospective Cohort of Persons 50 to 71 Years Old

This is the research that the study performed by the CDC was based upon. If you look at Figure 1, Chart A, you will see that the lowest chance of death in the sample group was people with a BMI between 25 and 28 (which is classified as overweight).

Let us know how the complaining works and if it solves the obesity problem.

I never said you were wrong in that being fat is unhealthy. I'm just saying that complaining and putting people down doesn't help. And because I think that, it does not mean I'm sitting on my ***. I was just giving my opinion.

I've said earlier that encouragement helps people a lot. Sounds like that helped your friend, which is a good thing.

What you are saying already makes more sense.

I'm not even denying that "has 17% more chance to die" is NECESSARILY stupid. Not at all. But the trick to quoting statistics is that you also need to quote the context in which the very quote fits.

True, everyone has a 100 percent chance of dying. But between 51 and 70, some people have more chance to die than others. Everyone dies within 200 years of their birth. But people die at different ages, and sometimes some predictors can calculate the chances of a person taken at random at what age he or she will die.

Statistics get a bad name because people quote statistics unthinkingly. A lot of research is meaningless, true, but the neglecting of co-quoting contextually necessary specifics is more often the culprit for seeing meaningless probability statistics in the media.

You're right, now it starts to fall in place.

Woah, this thread is moving fast. I'm quoting different people here.

Actually Sociology 101 teaches us that it does work. The threat of public ridicule does make people change their behaviors.

Some people, under some circumstances, will change some of their behaviors due to threat of public ridicule - that doesn't make it desirable to use threat of public ridicule as a means of changing behavior. Some people who have weight issues have both addiction issues and self esteem issues. While addiction drives them to continue eating, being victims of public ridicule can exacerbate the self esteem issue, creating a cycle. A fat cycle.

People who have a healthy level of self esteem will not be effected by ignorant and childish people ridiculing them.

Best case scenario: you have someone who has changed their behavior because of this threat of public ridicule - is that desirable? I don't think so. I'd rather they learn to value themselves and their healthy.

and I have met some offly disturbing confident fat girls

It must be offensive to your sensibilities to meet a heavy girl who respects herself.

Once again Spider voices my own thoughts. What so disturbing about a fat girl being super confident? I've known some very heavy women who were not only super confident, they were semi-athletic. They'd go on long distance week long hikes, they go bike touring, long distance swimming. I find them to be very attractive women.

its like oh oh his grammar isn't right so him saying fat is unhealthy has no relevancy

Thats not how i took it, at all. I thought the whole point was: people have preferences. You don't like fat girls. Some people don't like people who can't (or don't bother) to use proper english. I agree with Spider, its completely on topic.

No, that's what the studies say. And not "fat", because that's a descriptive term that doesn't mean anything clinically. People who are between "optimum weight" and "obese" live longer than anyone else on average.

It makes sense to me. Past a certain point, being overweight places unreasonable physical stress on different systems of the body, which could shorten your life span. But below that point, slightly overweight people seem to me to be less psychologically stressed (and less effected by stressers) than all us skinny people.

Skinny meditating monks would be an exception, with their

I dont thinks its about fat, skinny, tall, short. I think its all in the way a lady carries herself. Confidence is sexy

Agreed.

Again, you're just talking about your own preferences. Why not let others have theirs as well?

Some people have difficulty accepting that others are really very different then they are. Also, some people find it threatening when people have beliefs different then theirs.

Consider:

rolls on the other hand are just disgusting

Maybe this is obvious to everyone, but: this is only an opinion. Some people have different opinions. Some people actually like rolls of fat on a women.

You are right, to feel bitter for not appreciated for putting your neck on the line.

I know other soldiers, however, who went into the army at 18, to get a university education, they were laughing at everyone, one of these guys I know even got married, he was sent to Afgh, he saw death, and his baby got born back home two days after his best buddy was blown to pieces. He is depressed as hell, goes back into war for second term in a month, and he is not complaining for being out in the mud while we fatten our pink ***** back here.

He realizes he made a bad decision by going into the navy, into the armed forces, he knows war is hell much like you, he knows that he can't complain because that means he is negating either all his noble upper hand that he is doing it not selfishly, and if he is not, then he would be negating his own intelligence.

So it's okay for you to say that we sit here fattening our pink bottoms while you face death almost daily, but it's okay for us to say that you made a decision once that you could just as easily not make, and if you did, then why blame us? Because we did not make the same stupid decision?

I don't see why this is a moral fault in us. I reject that, and yes, we do have the right to speculate and philosophise, and you do have the right to go out and shoot people's heads off in Afgh.

That's the way I see it, anyway.

You are not in Viet Nam, where people were sent. You are in Afgh, where you signed up to go. Biiig difference, my friend.

I am by no means fat, but I do have a fe extra pounds. It seems as though most men are looking for women that are like models and/or down right skinny. I would like to believe that's not true. If you are a man that appreciates a little meat with your potatoes or a woman that agrees, I would love to hear from you!!

I wish you well OP. I think you have the right attitude.

I giggled to myself when I read that someone found it off-putting for a fat girl to have confidence. Confidence is not measured in pounds.....it's measured in self worth and pride for the person that you are. It's all encompassing, not just a visual peek in a good mirror.
