Maybe related to the principle that if you tell someone there are a trillion stars in the universe, they believe you. However, if you tell someone the paint on the wall is wet, they have to touch it to be sure. They're trying to prove you wrong and gie themselves a shining 45 seconds of glory in being right or persuasive about something.

Lots of interesting opinions on this thread.

I don't drink, never have, made the decision at a young age. I'm 38 now and still have never had any alcohol. But that's just me. I don't pass judgment on others who do drink because my decision was just mine.

I do hang out in the bars sometimes, but it's to see bands and hang out with friends, not to consume alcohol. If I could go see live music without ever setting foot in a bar, I would. But that's where the music typically is, so, that's where I go.

When I tell people I don't drink, they usually say, "Really? NEver? NEVER? Not even on your 21st birthday or a glass of wine with dinner? REally?" And then I say, "Yes, really." And that's the end of the conversation. Or they may ask how come I don't drink. I have my reasons but they are my reasons, so, I just say, "I just don't, that's all." That usually satisfies the curiosity of most people I've encountered.

I wish I could meet people like that. I like to see pay pre view UFC fight at bars, but now I don't know if I want to go anymore

People tend to argue when you say "You can't make me."

Nothing to do with drinking...

Why when I tell people that I never drink alcohol before and never will that try to get me to drink? I don't understand why they keep trying.

People look at me shocked when I informed them I don't drink. I get asked "Why not?" a lot to which I reply "Why should I?"

After hearing I don't drink, I then get asked, "Well, do you smoke? Get high??"

Why do people assume that I need to be inebriated or under any influence to enjoy my life? I prefer to live long enough to see my daughter's daughters. My life is interesting enough without smoking, drinking or drug use.

People just feel the need to "fit in". Most people i know that smoke, drink or use drugs started doing so because someone in their life was doing it. Pack mentality.

Continue standing apart... I stand with you!

I don't see why people like to drink anyway

Because alcohol is a wonderful social lubricant when used properly. People have been using it for this purpose for 1000s of years. Why re-invent the wheel?

I didn't drink until I was in my 30s. But then, I discovered it's virtues and I've been a moderate, social drinker ever sense. I may go months without a drink, but when the occasion calls for it, I'll have a few.

Boom, that's me last night. I was the devil of the dancefloor. I would be embarrassed if someone would recognize me the next time. blushing bigsmile

Because when we were little our mothers always told us "don't mock it till you try it" to make us eat things we didn't like.

This is why I don't do anything I don't want to do, no one can make me now.

If you don't have a problem with alcohol, having one alcoholic drink a night (4 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1.5 ounces of spirits) for women-up to two for men-seems to have a beneficial effect on your heart by raising levels of that healthy HDL cholesterol. It also helps you to wind down, so your blood pressure can do the same. Our preference: red wine, because it also contains antioxidants. ...i know you said you never like to try it but if you have high cholesterol it may help you:)and i think people offer drinks to people or food to try as a kind gesture not to be rude or ignorant but to be kind and if you reject in a rude way then they feel like you just being a snob to them now if they know you don't drink and you already told them ahead of time not to offer you nothing then they are ignorant to offer you it or maybe forgot :) i use to buy tons of friends beers and drinks when i use to go to bars a lot in the past ......but is is up to you and i guess most people in this world have a drink sometime sooner or later just to see what its like and its very relaxing a ice cold beer on a hot day

I don't think people believe there are a trillion stars in the universe.

There could be a trillions and one.

The point is nobody cares how many starts there are. A "trillion" simply means "a lot." People can't even get their minds around what a trillion is.

Paint on a wall, THAT we can comprehend.

I suspect it's because you are good-looking. I am ugly, so people don't give a flying monkey's toupee if I drink with them or not -- they'd rather I didn't, more for them. So I don't drink, and they don't pester me.

But a nice-looking feller or girl is a different story. She or he is more likely to drop his or her inhibitions if she or he drinks.

Ergo, you, OP, are very good looking, and that I know coz people want to force the drink down your throat.

Ahem... in my grade seven class the class project for the school's patron saint's birthday was to count from one to a trillion. I KNOW what a trillion is.

That sound good and all but not enough to get me to try, there are other ways you help your cholesterol.
