I have worked retail for almost 10 years. Its a hard job sometimes. I have watched cashiers get so nervous and count the wrong change back because the customer is giving them a hard time. I usually tell them to take deep breaths and relax. Then other times its their first job and they really dont know how to count change. It could go either way.

yes that is a different scenario than what I was thinking. most any task is made more difficult with a meanie breathing down your neck...flowerforyou

with cash registers these days telling the cashier what the change is though, I was imagining that making things simple under normal circumstances.

Yes the computers now days makes things so much easier and i have noticed that its happening alot more lately that kids are not being prepared for the real world. Like counting change correctly or even reading or spelling correctly.

WHY AREN'T SCHOOLS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN HOW TO COUNT CHANGE?

I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2,
and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there,

holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters,

but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction

to her, she stood there and cried...

lol...this just reminded me of when my dad and I ordered ten 99 cent cheeseburgers and the girl in the drive thru could not figure out the change for a ten dollar bill because the register was broke...sad..

I was in a department store browsing while two teenage boys were talking about buying something for $7.00 but wanted to buy 4 of them. One kid asked the other how much that would be and the other proceeded to get out his cell phone to use the calculator. I yelled "for goodness sake; its $28.00"

I would be yelling as well --

aren't they relying more on calculators in schools ...thought I heard that sometime ago ... and most cash register do the work for them ... and I would defiantly have a phone for back up ... because most of the time my brain will work for myth and sometimes it does not and I have to wright somethings down to be sure... but they really should teach the children while their young like they use to ... I did hear their are very few females that are good in math ... but some are great... I am terrible lol that's why you would never see me working in a bank... if you work at it all the time then you know how... but if you don't your minds slips a little ...

I remember my first job.. I was a freshman is HS... Worked in a ice cream store.. in hindsight.. I had no business being at the cash register.. I was not ready to handle the public... who.. by the way can be brutal on a kid.

maybe the kid was overwhelmed a bit.

Kids don't learn to make change anymore because when they are in elementary school they are allowed to use calculators. They don't teach them how to multiply and memorize. I was very upset when my stepdaughter came home and said she had to have a calculator for school. She was in 3rd grade.
I once had a girl give me back too much change. I tried to explain to her three times what she did and she just shook her shoulders. I finally just walked away. She shouldn't have been hired if she couldn't count.

They also don't teach the kids to write longhand (script). What do these people do when they need put their signature on a legal document?

I worked in a department store (small town) when I was 16 and not only did I run the register, I was responsible for doing the deposit and walking 2 blocks to the bank with it.

lol I had a guy who's cash register wasn't working... he actually got sum paper out, wrote it down, subtracted, even crossed out, carried the one over lol etc etc all to give me my change back. I watched him in amazement, that he just had no concept of how to count change back.

At least he was persistent in giving your correct change back. I'd usually tell the cashier to keep it cuz I can't count too.

Girls are usually better at change counting than boys.
For example;
Jack and Jill went up a hill
Each with a buck and a quarter.
Jill came down with $2.50.

BTW...those who considers themselves good at counting the change, may give a try to answer below simple puzzle pls....

A boy buys goods worth INR.200 from a shop. (shopkeeper is selling the goods with zero profit).

The boy gives him INR.1000 note.

The shopkeeper gets the change from the next shop and keeps INR.200 for himself and returns INR.800 to the boy.

Later the shopkeeper of the next shop comes with the INR.1000 note saying that the note is duplicate and takes his money back.

How much LOSS did the shopkeeper face?
