I learned to count change in elementary. It is called basic arithematic! One doesn't need to use the brain for basic maths anymore. Student are allowed calculators in class so. I was allowed to have a slide rule in high school. Calculators if you could afford one were verboten! |

(Satan's condiments......eeewwww) I remember this one time I had a buncha highball glasses on the tray & it was kinda dark a few were scotch & soda - the rest were stuff live BV & 7 - they all looked like dark piss well I got back to the table and forgot what was what - so I just put them on the table and ran off...

Years ago my boss and I were trying to figure out a problem, lots of numbers being thrown around, he's the kind that just talks out loud as he thinks, he says "So 4 into 100..."
I whip out my calculator and had it half way entered when I stopped, looked up and he was staring at me with his mouth agape. I haven't used a calculator since. It's great mental exercise - even for the tougher calculations.

When I was an assistiant manager at Burger King The Drive thru register and the cash drawer were seperate and I got to teach the drive thru cashiers how to count change.

I am so anal about pennies. I cant bear to have pennies. Its my personal challenge to find ways to pay with them even if Im only trading up for a whole nickel at once. Because of that, I often have the experience you refer to. I try to hand it to them before the bills tho so they can type it into the ol machine, and not upset the order of thinklessness. I also understand that I am a loon, however. I never see anyone else do that foolishness. meh. I have a little change purse I got from the bank. It is great for people who have holes in their pockets. The pennies really start weighing after a while though so I try to get rid of them as soon as possible.

When I worked at the Dairy Queen in the 90's, it used to drive me nuts that the high school kids that worked there didn't know how to make change...
When my stepdaughter was in grade school instead of learning multiples they could use a calculator... Not the way to learn... |

I worked as a fuel technition(I pumped gas) and didn't even have a register all I had was a wad of tens and twenties in my back pocket,a wad of fives and ones in my shirt pocket, and a change thing on my belt. My head was the register. I did round things up all the time though.

The worst that can happen:
You buy something that comes to, with tax, $9.83. You give the cashier $20. They punch in "received: $2000.00. The tender change will be $1990.17, naturally. The manager is out to lunch, the other patrons behind me are patronizing, and the cashier has a nervous breakdown. Hehe. |

These days it's well nigh impossible to leave a kid behind. Everyone's worried, you see, that they will be charged with not leaving the kid's behind. SShhhh! |

You can find teachers throughout the educational system, from elementary to post-doc, who argue that we don't really need to teach arithmetic because one always has a calculator, computer, register/POS machine, etc there to do the work for you.

Some stuff you dont need to be taught, or at least shouldn't need to be taught. But then all kids are taught basic maths surely? (and yes i have been taught basic English, math does have an S on it! Bloody foreigners).

I taught all my kids how to count using money. And went on to show them division and adding and multiplying all through that same One dollar as their whole, for making 100,,then even into percentages,decimals, fractions, all through showing them through common pocket change. Just wondering??lol..I'm old enough to have worked my first jobs HAVING TO MAKE THE CHANGE, in my mind, to the customers... McDonalds,,,,whoooopeeeee....
