Well guess I'm one of the lucky one
I'm pretty good at math :)

But I know loads of people who can't check :(

Like Ruth said of all the thing to teach in school
They should teach kids to count change

Too much of them rely on calculators
So their brain gets lazy

sadly, math ,spelling, and reading comprehension have been replaced in our public schools with calculators, computers, spellcheck, and sex education,,,,,

Even though we might question why our kids are not learning this in school? It makes me wonder why the PARENTS are not realizing that their kids can not give change out???

Too many latch key kids now days the Parents seem to rely on others to teach their kids and they themselves never even check to see if they are learning basic things.slaphead

Sorry I still blame the parents for not seeing this long before they get in High School.....

Many excuses are the Teachers are the ones that are suppose to be teaching. Even though this is true to and extent. Seems the parents should be doing some follow up on what is going on as well.

I can not count on my fingers and toes how many times I have ran into this same issue.

Parents need to wake up and check on what is happening earlier on with their kids and speak out....whoa

I did learn in Accounting that you should NEVER rely on your head. Do it in your head then check it on the calculator. Always. There are common mistakes which people make. Check out GAAP guidelines.

Time is changing.

No one has time to count the change

Its easy to say "Keep the change" than to count it.

I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2,
and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there,

holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register.

I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters,

but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction

to her, she stood there and cried...

I'm sure, that girl will become a billionaire soon...!!

I learned to count change in elementary. It is called basic arithematic!

I learned "basic arithmetic" in school too, but it is not the same as learning to count change back to someone.

You know, I agree with this. Counting back is harder than simply adding or subtracting, especially if you've got a line of people waiting. Plus, there's a common scam where the person gives the cashier an extra amount of money that doesn't compute easily with the total bill, gets them confused, and the cashier ends up giving them too much back in return.

Don't take this as meaning I think education today is all right. I think it's horrendous.

It's pretty amazing how much "technology" is doing what we consider "basics" nowadays.
Ever wonder what would happen if the power grid failed across the USA and people actually
had to talk to each other and think for a few days?

haaaaaaaa

catastrophe

Ive said most my adult life, anyone serious about going to war with us doesnt need a bomb,,,just take out the power grids,,lol

we are so addicted and dependent upon 'technlogy', we are truly vulnerable

Does anyone here think like me? lol
I taught all my kids how to count using money.
And went on to show them division and adding and multiplying all through that same One dollar as their whole, for making 100,,then even into percentages, decimals,
fractions, all through showing them through common pocket change.
Just wondering??lol..I'm old enough to have worked my first jobs HAVING TO MAKE THE CHANGE, in my mind, to the customers...laugh
McDonalds,,,,whoooopeeeee....

great idea,,,,

I think we 'trust' professionals to do their job without following up,,thats a good point

how many people go to a doctor, and then verify that they gave you the right medicine?,, I Think many tend to do that when they send kids to the teacher,,,most dont think to verify the teacher has taught the child, they rely on grades, and if the grades seem fine they assume the child is being taught correctly,,,,,

WHY AREN'T SCHOOLS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN HOW TO COUNT CHANGE?

In my days we had to learn how to count change both forward and backward.

The only change of cashier arrhythmetics is in the constant change of sales tax rates.

I mostly miss the ka-ching bell of the machines of ole'.

p.s.

I have a cash register just like that.bigsmile

Ha! Caught ya!!

You probably figure how much you'll pay while you still haven't left the house, and then put-ring it up in your private cash register, which tells you the secret answer, you mark that on a slip, continually repeat the amount on the slip on your walk to the grocery store, and when time time comes, you bellow it out to the unsuspecting poor little cashier girl, and leave under a smug arche de triomphe as she is left behind trembling, whimpering, and sobbing uncontrollably.

Unless... unless it is impossible to buy anything anywhere on this continent for less than two dollars. In which case the entire exercise of the respondents' posting of comments was futile.

I've come across quite a few employees over 25yrs who has had trouble with this. Rule of thumb for a cashier is to count up mentally. Example: Customer hands you a 5$ Item cost .73 cents... (fish it out of the drawer as you're counting up)

Add 7cents to get you to >>>>> 80cents...
then add .20cents to get to >>>> a buck
then add 4$ to get to>>>>> five bucks

Financial advice on Mingle? Priceless! smokin

I can't remember who taught me to count change. I know that I was doing it at my first job at Burger King when I was 16. But, I don't know who taught me. I don't think I learned it in school.

Now see, I would have added .02 to get to .75 and then add a quarter to get to the buck.
