How does one encourage a significant other to be open to their opinions instead of trying to stifle them?

Thoughts from all of you clever people please

Let's say for the sake of the discussion you did...would you encourage your "hypothetical sig other" to be open to your views & opinions? And if so....how?

Don't try to change them, you are asking for trouble.

How about you be open to their opinions? Can't?

Then find the right significant other.

Do you really want to spend your life in a battle?

If you are trying to "encourage" a significant other to be "open" to your opinions... THEN you are trying to change them if they don't like your opinions.

But if you insist on trying, then you better be good at using diplomacy and persuasion. ... and I mean VERY GOOD.

or you could do what most women do... withhold sex. laugh

He may not agree with your opinions, but he will pretend to...

Is that what you really want?

Sometimes you can find a guy who does't care what your opinions are. (He only wants one thing..) Or a guy who has no opinions of his own. (He only wants one thing and some peace and quiet.)

Remember, you don't always have to agree on everything. Let him have his own opinions and you have your own opinions.

Be yourselves.

Accept each other for your differences. Is that so hard? Do you really want a carbon copy of yourself for a spouse? How boring is that?

I would let them know, i'm not judgmental and very open with my ideas and such. I don't think I would try to hard, and wouldn't try to change them, if their disposition is naturally different. I would share ideas that require open thinking and discussions to find out how much our opinions differ. If they are too rigid, it probably wouldn't have worked its way into a relationship...

I would say leave them. Why be with someone who doesn't acknowledge your views and opinions, especially in a partnership?

The two of you would first need to share common ground, having established the same standard to compare things to. It does no good to argue about which route to take if you haven't agreed upon a destination.

I'm always open to hearing others' opinions and views. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily going to change my own views and opinions, though.

Ya, I don't think all the encouragement
in the world will make someone who does
not give a hoot for others opinions, change.

Personally, I like EVERYone's views on stuff,
it amplifies my own opinion, it can even
change it.

Opinions are based on the knowledge we have.
You don't learn anything while talking.

That, and, "Edith, if they put your brain
in a bird, it would fly backwards."
