I remember driving in my car with my girlfriend at the time. We'd only been dating a short while, but we were getting along very well. I had the radio on NPR. This is the station I generally prefer to listen to while driving. Without asking, she reached over and changed the station. I let her get away with it, but in that moment I had a flash that this kind of thing (her lack of respect for my things) would be the thing I'd eventually leave her for.

Have you ever had a similar experience? He/she said or did something and you knew that would be the thing that would one day break up the relationship? If so,what was it?

Ate food from my plate without asking me!
This is NOT romantic no matter what the romantic dramas tell you guys!

My Ex was a Filipino/Mexican mix, she had the lightest skin in her family and her brothers always complained of bias- waiting to get a seated at Denny's and stuff. Anyhow, her really disgusting whore POS girlfriend(who I nicked named Connie the Cow) tries to "trap" a guy by getting pregnant; needless to say that didn't work out and I started throwing her a few bucks to get by. So she brings the daughter over one day to beg for a few bucks, when she leaves the Ex goes "Wasn't the baby a cute Niglet" (did I mention the dad was black, I am always distracted by the thought of that woman's baked bean teeth). That is when I realized what a POS I had married

If I ever had the thought "______ is the reason I will one day break up with this person" I would either talk to them about the problem (as in the car radio issue) or just break up with them immediately (as in the racism issue).

Why are you letting something that is so serious in your mind sit without talking about it? Granted I would not have just changed the radio station. I would have broken up with you for listening to NPR.

I found out an ex was taking street drugs, when I phoned him to get my stuff from his house. She answered his phone while he was in the shower. She demanded I pay what he owes her in drug money. Noooooooooo way. I cut him out of my life after that.

Choose your battles wisely. Car radios are for background noise not for listening. Racism, where and on what your money is spent, sex (frequency and form), common topics of conversation, these are what makes or breaks a relationship. If a fuc*ing radio station is a deal breaker one or both of you have bigger issues.

If a person I was dating did something that bothered me enough that I thought it would end the relationship one day, I'd discuss it with them. I can't think of anything like that, though. Changing the radio station is not high on my list of things that would bug me that much.

laugh Can't help but agree Keith....If changing a car radio station without first getting permission from the driver translates into the beginning of the end, there was no beginning to end....laugh

I don't think it was the changing of the radio station that was the deal breaker so much as he saw this as a disrespect for him and his things. Which is why talking about the underlying concern would have been a good idea.

Right, which the "bigger issues" covers. And I agree with you. Talking about the issues would have been a good idea.

I had a guy do that to me in my car. I just changed the radio back to my station and he didn't say a word. Next time in my vehicle; he asked if he could change the station. Guess he got the hint. LOL

I must of turned into a wuss, radio stations don't bother me. I use my toys to try and ensure my date has a good time, rather it be radio or what we do for the evening.

To me as long as its not country or a hockey game; I could care less really what the station is playing unless I am tired and need peppy music to keep me awake.

Does that really work? And what is "peppy" to you? I have a hard time find lively music that doesn't make me want to gnash my teeth.

Yes; it does work. I love anything from Stephen Wolf, Lady Gaga, Keisha, ZZ Top, etc to name a few.

I didn't break up with her or speak to her about it right away because, at the time, it seemed like such a small thing. It's just changing the radio station. What's there to get bent out of shape about? I didn't realize this lack of respect would extend into other things in life that were much more important.

I can see that you didn't read the whole post. It wasn't her changing the radio station that was the problem. The problem was her general lack of respect for me and my things. The radio was just the first time I noticed it.
