Sometimes lying is just easier. I don't trust people who don't lie. And successful liars are typically fairly intelligent; it's the people that believe them that are ignorant (not stupid, necessarily... they may have the capacity to understand the truth but simply not the facts or information to refute the aforementioned misinformation).
