A dog was found abandoned at a Scottish train station next to a suitcase filled with its belongings and now the local animal welfare charity are looking for tips into who is the neglectful owner.

The dog, a male shar-pei named Kai, was found sitting with a leash attached to a banister at the Ayr railway station on Jan. 2, according to the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"Kai is around two to three years old and is a lovely dog with a nice nature," Scottish SPCA Inspector Stewart Taylor said in the group's release.

Amazing Animals From Around the World

The group reported that the suitcase contained a dog bowl, food, a pillow and toy -- although that doesn't clear the owner from wrongdoing.

Abandoning an animal is an offense in Scotland and, if they are able to determine who left the dog in the station, that person or persons could be banned from owning animals for life.

"Regardless of the fact Kai was left with his belongings, this was still a cruel incident and we are keen to identify the person responsible," Taylor said.

Officials were able to determine the dog's name because the animal had been microchipped by a previous owner. When they contacted that individual, he reported that he had sold the dog in 2013 but did not have any information on the new owner.

Taylor said that the group will care for the dog until they find an owner for Kai.

He may have simply packed his own suitcase and headed for the scottish highlands but, fearing consequence has refused to make any statements to police.

If you stayed in the town of Ayr, like that dog did you'd run away also! It was in the Scottish news yesterday and apparently it has a new home lined up already. Abandoning the dog at the Train station though was out of order. All because the dog has a problem with it's eye and the operation will cost quite a bit. Sad eh?

I can't believe the owner didn't at least purchase trainfare for Kai to travel to a nicer village, pin a 20 to his collar, and wish him the best of luck.

The nerve of some people.
Harrrumph!

Seriously, the cops should look into Kai's one known owner... Especially for matching luggage.

Dogs travel free in Scotland. They traced his real owner through the microchip in the dog, but he had passed the dog on 2 years ago to someone else. The dog needs a big eye operation done and it's gonna cost a bit. This is probably the real reason why it was abandoned at the Train station.

Wrong! The dog is 3 years old. It's been all over the news here in Scotland, this week. Ayr, is only 30 miles away from me.

I wonder if they'll send a SWAT team, 150 officers from 18 agencies, and an APC (tank) to serve the warrant on the owner if found .... like they would here in the US?

Meanwhile, Kai gets a new home..... not a bad ending to this point

And he is a cutie

People from as far away as the US have called a rescue centre about Kai, who was left tied to a railing with a suitcase.bigsmile

I just read a brief article about this a day or two ago. While it's still a tragedy that people are abandoning their pets (especially pets that they obviously cared for to a certain degree), at least they had the sense to include the dog's belongings. It's a far sight better than just abandoning your dog on the street and hope it survives long enough to find a good home.
