A New York family has been left homeless after law enforcement agencies effectively destroyed their entire house in the process of serving a warrant for a DUI.

The Ithaca Journal reported this week that 36-year-old David M. Cady Jr. had died after being barricaded in his home for three days.

After Cady missed court dates for a DUI over the summer, a warrant had been issued, and the Tompkins County Sheriff Ken Lansing said that the suspect was convinced that he would go to jail. Authorities said that they had reason to believe that Cady had been traveling to Pennsylvania to purchase ammunition so he would be ready when deputies arrived.

Deputies attempted to serve the warrant at around 7 p.m. on Dec. 30, which led to a three day standoff with Cady. Autopsy results later indicated that Cady died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect's wife, Melissa, and two sons were not harmed.

Video that began circulating on Tuesday showed the damage caused to the Cady home when the 18 law enforcement agencies decided to go in after the suspect.

Comment: 18 agencies for a DUI?!

The home, which easily could be mistaken for one that had been destroyed by a tornado, appears to have no external walls intact in the video. Some walls are only partially missing, while others are completely gone. The yard is scattered with shards of wood, windows, insulation and family belonging. Inside the home, food can still be seen sitting on the stove, but the kitchen and most of the other rooms are open to the outside elements.

Up to 150 law enforcement and emergency personnel reportedly participated in the operation.

Comment: Only in a police state would 150 people be needed to execute a warrant for a DUI.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Department said little about the damage to the house.

"Eventually, law enforcement knew and anticipated needing to enter the residence, in order to take the subject into custody," the statement insisted. "Based upon the information being developed through interviews and practices used by other agencies in the past, it became necessary to breech part of the outside area of the house to ensure the safety of all involved."

Comment: The video shows wholesale destruction of the Cady home, not a 'breech' in a 'part' of the home. What B.S.!

Danby Federated Church pastor Ed Enstine told The Ithaca Voice that the Cady family was now homeless.

"She really has lost all the stability in her life in one fell swoop, so she will have to go through quite a period of readjustment," Enstine said of Melissa Cady. "It's pretty traumatic - this is awful stuff we're dealing with."

According to the pastor, Cady's wife worked in the service industry and had little extra money to recover from the tragedy.

"She's basically lived her own life and worked and doesn't take handouts very easily, but in this case she's basically back to square 1 ... square 0, at this point," he explained.

The church was planning a chicken and biscuit dinner on Friday to take donations for the family.

"We're all just trying to figure out how to do something," Enstine noted, adding that the church had already given her a small amount of money to get by.

"She's going to need a lot more than that," he said.

He barricaded himself in his house. He had a $hitload of weapons and ammo. He put himself in this position. HE got the DUI, HE missed court, HE barricaded himself in his house so HE wouldn't go to jail. These are all actions HE created and brought upon himself. I am with the Law Enforcement on this one.

Better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6.

well, regardless, they didn't know about weapons when they started this, and no matter how stupid he may be, his family is now homeless... the police went way overboard with this, he wasn't threatening anyone, he wasn't trying to kill anyone, he simply did not want to go to jail... the police state ruined peoples lives that had nothing to do with this at all...

and i don't see where they found any weapons, either...

The moment an idiot barricade's themselves in their house, that causes a problem. They become dangerous and irrational and a danger to others. Umm, they had to find weapons since he shot himself.

They had to breach the house, and well we don't know the full details yet.

He should have screwed over his family like that. He should have manned up, took responsibility for his actions and done his time.

Anyone with that big of a fear to go to jail or prison usually has a lengthy criminal history. I am guessing in the upcoming days we will learn this guy does and will see exactly Law Enforcement took the actions they did.

Amazing isn't it? But it only counts as overkill, or rises any question at all, if the victim is black.....

This incident didn't even really make the news other than in the back pages of local papers and online websites.... where it's only beginning to go viral

Go figure

A New York sheriff's department said it destroyed a man's home during a standoff in order to reach a peaceful resolution as well as to protect the armed suspect inside, but the man ended up killing himself anyway.

Nevertheless, the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office is satisfied that none of the more than 100 officers from multiple agencies were hurt during the 60 hour standoff.

Sheriff officials explained in a press release "it became necessary to breech part of the outside area of the house to ensure the safety of all involved."

But a Youtube video, posted below, shows they did a little more than breech part of the home.

According to the Ithaca Journal:

For three nights and two days, law enforcement officers surrounded the home, broke through walls and used tear gas to get Cady to surrender.

Lansing said deputies tried to apprehend Cady throughout the fall. He eluded law enforcement until deputies showed up on his doorstep the evening of Dec. 30.

The police tactics - which Lansing defended as standard techniques to force a peaceful conclusion to a standoff - left extensive damage to the walls of the family home. Hours after the standoff, the home was condemned by Danby Code Enforcement.

Agencies that assisted during the standoff:

Ithaca Police Department

Cornell University Police

Ithaca College Public Safety

Ithaca Fire Department

New York State Police

New York State Park Police

Cayuga County Sheriff's Office

Pennsylvania State Police

Syracuse Police Department

Elmira Police Department

Broome County Sheriff's Office

Onondaga County Sheriff's Office

Tompkins County Office of Emergency Management

Bangs Ambulance

Guthrie Air

Tompkins County Mental Health

Danby Fire Department

Onondaga Emergency Medical Services

http://photographyisnotacrime.com/2015/01/new-york-deputies-destroy-mans-home-standoff-force-peaceful-outcome/

It might be added that after they destroyed his home they left it unattended so anyone could walk thru it (as the video shows) taking what remained of the victims items if desired, then condemned the property they had just destroyed

The stunning turn of events left Mrs. Cady and her two children with no father and no home.

Ironic isn't it? They did this "for the safety of all concerned"!

So, an unstable drunk jeopardized his family, by refusing to own his actions.
No sympathy for him from me.

not really about "him", where is his family supposed to live now? they are the victims here, not the stupid drunk...

The drunk should have had enough concern for his family's health and welfare, to have better thought out the consequences of his actions.

Suicide only assists the process of natural selection.

People use drugs and alcohol for many reasons. For some it is simply a social passing, for others, and I speak from experience, it is a coping mechanism that can become habitual very easily and destroy your life if the cause is not treated.

I am a Nam Vet. Returning home was not the glorious parties in the street as those returning from WW2 enjoyed. We were spit on, called names, had things thrown at us.... and came home with our crutches already well in place.

There was no PTSD treatments or even an understanding for many years after our return. Agent Orange was ignored, even denied, as well as the many symptoms that accompanied it.... often not even revealing itself until years after our return.

Addiction takes many forms, has many excuses and reasons, and few will admit the problem and seek the help needed to overcome them.

It's a sickness that needs to be dealt with medically, not by SWAT units and police in most cases! When you are trapped in addiction there is very little self control....even to make court appearances.

This is abuse of power, ignorance and intolerance, and could have been dealt with in a much better fashion than a Ruby Ridge, Waco scenario causing yet another family disaster and loss of life!

well, the main point of the article was the unnecessary force, time, money and destruction the police state in action... you can blame the drunk all you want, but it falls on bad decisions by police , their bosses and obarry (for allowing and enabling things like this) in destroying something that didn't need to be destroyed, the family and their home.. i hope the next time you miss a court date, they don't destroy all your property and put your family out...
