Charlie Sheen is expected to disclose that he is HIV positive in an exclusive "Today" Show interview on Tuesday, a source with direct knowledge of the interview told CNNMoney.

On Monday, NBC announced that the actor would be making a "revealing personal announcement" on the "Today" show Tuesday morning.

The source told CNNMoney that Sheen is expected to discuss his HIV condition when he sits down with Matt Lauer live from the "Today" show studio in New York City.

In addition, Hollywood public relations specialist Howard Bragman was quoted in People Magazine saying that Sheen "is getting treatment, and a lot of people in his life know about it."

Bragman told CNNMoney that he was quoted accurately in the People Magazine story.

"I've known about this a long time, it's not a surprise to me," Bragman, who said he was asked to work with Sheen, told People. "I feel very sorry for his pain. And I hope it's used as a teachable moment for the world. This is a disease that can affect anyone."

Bragman said he did not end up working with Sheen directly on his HIV status.

Sheen, 50, is one of Hollywood's best known actors, starring in hit films like "Wall Street" and on CBS's "Two and a Half Men."

Sheen was fired from "Two and a Half Men" in 2011 following a public meltdown that had the actor lashing out at the show's creator.

Among the more notorious points of his career, Sheen entered drug rehab twice and lived with three women.

Sheen has been married multiple times to women including Brooke Mueller and Denise Richards and had children with each.

His salary on "Two and a Half Men" was one of the highest on TV at the time at $1.25 million per episode in 2010.

Sheen did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

The news of Sheen's "Today" appearance and the reason for it quickly became a top story on many sites.

The Today show tweeted about the live interview with Sheen about 12:15 pm ET. At 12:35 pm, the National Equirer posted a "world exclusive" reporting that Sheen had tested positive for the disease.

About 20 minutes later, TMZ reported that sources told the site the "Today" show interview would disclose Sheen's HIV status.

Other news sites including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and USA Today reported Sheen's status while citing the TMZ and the Enquirer's stories.

The Drudge Report on Monday put the Enquirer's story at the top of its site with the headline, "Mag: Charlie Sheen 'HIV Positive'" in capital letters. Within hours of the Today show tweet, Sheen was the top trending Twitter topic in the United States.

Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen revealed on Tuesday he is HIV positive.

In an interview Tuesday on NBC's "Today," the 50-year-old Sheen says he tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS.

"It's a hard three letters to absorb. It's a turning point in one's life," the former "Two and a Half Men" actor said.

Sheen said he had already paid millions of dollars to keep the information secret.

"We're talking shakedowns," he said.


Sheen said that he had had unprotected sex since being diagnosed, but also claimed he had told every partner since being diagnosed that he was HIV positive.

His personal physician sat by his side and detailed the star’s treatment. He said after the actor was diagnosed he was “immediately put on treatment, strong anti-viral drugs, which have suppressed the virus.”

Sheen and his doctor declared the star has an undetectable level of the virus in his blood.

“Charlie does not have AIDS,” his physician declared. “Charlie is healthy.”

Sheen said he takes four pills every day and he has never missed a dose.

“I still drink a little bit,” he admitted.

His physician said Sheen’s substance abuse issues have concerned his doctors.

“We’re so so anxious that if he was overly depressed or abusing substances he would forget these pills,” the physician said. “He’s managed to continue to take this medication.”

Sheen said he found out he was HIV positive about four years ago. His symptoms began with "crushing headaches."

"I thought I had a brain tumor," he recalled. "I thought it was over."

The star said he was coming forward with the truth because of the rumors in the press surrounding his health.

"I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, that threaten the health of so many others that couldn't be further from the truth."

Drug and alcohol use have marred Sheen's personal and professional life in recent years. He was kicked off CBS' "Two and a Half Men" in 2011 after an explosive meltdown that included calling the show's producer "a contaminated little maggot."

His escapades have also included the revelation that he spent more than $50,000 as a client of "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss' prostitution ring.

"Two and a Half Men" debuted in 2003 and starred Sheen as womanizing bachelor Charlie Harper. It made Sheen one of TV's highest-paid actors and at its peak was TV's most-watched sitcom.

Gee, surprise, surprise, the guy only spent the last twenty years, drugging, drinking, and dating hookers, who'd a thunk it?

Sheen exposed countless woman to a deadly disease.. knowingly. And unbeknown to them.

Charlie stands on stage like some sort of hero and received words of encouragement from some of his Hollywood cronies. His publicist stated that he reluctant to come forward was due to not wanting to be sued by past partners... again, self serving.

Charlie will die of this disease before the women he infected start to die. And it is a long painful death that these woman are in for.

Only a self serving animal would do that to another human being.

I could care less what he did for a living or how good he was at it.. he signed some death certificates.

Anyone stupid enough to have sex with Charlie Sheen has to be sick in the head. I do think he should have been locked up and he may well be since he clearly did not stop what he was doing. I will never in a million years believe he took his medication as he should have.

I doubt it. Every woman he has been with in the last 5 years is going to file law suits against him and from what I have read that is in the hundreds. In the past week alone I read he has been with several different women.

He has crisis management people working on overtime right now.

Well, some people are just idiots you and I both know that.

I, for one, wont hafta worry about ending up " at the hands of such people" because I havent spent my entire adult life knee deep in hookers and blow. As such, I dont feel the need to pat "poor" Charlie on the back and say "There there now, itll be ok, its not your fault"...when, in fact, it is his fault.
He's been offered help many times....way before this....too bad he didnt follow through with it.
