So many families are living on the edge of poverty, that one little setback can push them into the abyss of homelessness. A new report released Monday shows that about one in 30 American children was homeless at some point last year. That's about 2.5 million kids, and an 8 percent increase to "an historic high," according to the study from the National Center on Family Homelesness. Just over half are younger than six years old.

“It is pretty alarming,” said center director Carmela DeCandia, who co-authored the report. “Poverty is really the driver,” she said. About 20 percent of American kids live below the poverty line, where even a small financial setback can have catastrophic consequences for a family. Five years into the economic recovery, the poorest Americans have actually lost ground, a function of stagnant wages for the working poor and rising rents. Kids are often the collateral damage. Chronically hungry, tired and stressed, up to 40 percent of those old enough to attend school exhibit mental health issues, and they often struggle academically

I corrected the hyperlink. By the way, the actual report says the following:
"Different definitions used by different federal agencies create confusion in states, cities, agencies, and the public regarding estimates of homeless populations and eligibility for services and housing. For example, the HUD definition of homelessness is narrower than those used by the Departments of Education (ED), Health and Human Services (HHS), Labor, Justice, and Agriculture. HUD focuses primarily on homeless people on the streets, in shelters, in vehicles, or in other places not meant for human habitation."

Sad isn't it? That it is not clear.
But it can't be.
.. Going house to house or sofa to sofa or the state paying for one of those hotels rooms is homeless.
And just imagine how many are not registered in school & may or may not be counted at temporary shelters & churches.. Or their parents give an address for food stamps, but they don't live there.

Should be simple - if you do not have a permanent home, you are homeless.

I don't doubt the numbers. I actually think it is higher. State institutions may not be included nor runaways.

No matter what.. It is a disgrace

Every time I see a headline like this, my "BS antennae" start twitching - you know the saying, 'there are lies, d@mned lies, & statistics'...

In this case, I find myself wondering exactly WHO is being counted in this study - I know it says 'American kids', but are they including the families of illegal immigrants, perhaps by passively not filtering their data? spock

Is this "National Center on Family Homelesness" behind the scenes pushing for increased funding? what

What's the ultimate objective behind crafting a headline that's so obviously intended to manipulate emotions?? spock

Believe it or not, I HATE to be such a cynical @$$, but entirely TOO often, cynicism has proven to be justified. sad2 It reminds me of a saying that I've read - "The more cynical I get, the more I realize that I just can't keep up!" slaphead

It isn't just children, they are usually with one parent or both.

Then there are the vets.....

Isn't it wonderful how our country helps so many but can't feed or house our own while me make Senators and movie stars of traitors?

I pass a few welfare hotels on the way to work in Jersey and it is heart wrenching to see the kids playing in the courtyard or out near the street. These motels are almost always in some shitty industrial area.. dumps.

The other people I see out there are the mothers, not the fathers. I never really see any men around. So, I would think that a big part of the homeless problem is lack of some men to take responsibility for their children, thus forcing them into a homeless situation and the woman too, as they were the other 1/2 of that decision to conceive or not to protect against conceiving.

And it is the kids that suffer.

Not saying this is the only problem.. not by a long shot.. but I think it is one of them.

I guess they are busy.

Thank god they're busy.

The more people whine and complain, the more they whine and complain for "the government" to do something.

And that's when you get things like Obamacare, and broke Social Security, and welfare fraud, and more people on disability than ever before, and taxes greater than any other time, and months to years of focusing on who can be legally defined as "married" while strangers pour into insecure borders, and the patriot act, and constant warfare.

When you "get the word out," all you are doing is saying "someone else take care of this problem for me!" kick the can down the road until it lands on some politicians lap who says "I can do something about that! It'll get me reelected! I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Shut up, keep it in your community, and get your community to do something about it. The nation is not your community.

The more you focus on national problems, the more you are asking for government to step in, the more you ask the government to do things for you, the more they are going to take away from you in order to do it.

So, thank god they're busy.

the only issue there is that 'community' does not exist in a vacuum but in a city, which exists in a state, which exists in a nation,,etc,,

its all connected, so there is rarely a way for a problem in a 'community' to not have some basis or origin in the connection that exists/existed between the 'community' and its city, state, nation,,,etc,,

dotn get me wrong,, there are smaller 'community' issues, but there are also larger 'systemic' issues that no one 'community' is going to resolve without cooperation from the system,,,,

homelessness isnt just an issue in any one 'community' but across the nation

as to hashtags, they are only a reflection of cultural values,

sometimes a call for systemic changes, and sometimes just a call for cultural change, and sometimes just a call to show support

anyone can literally hashtag anything,,,,and it may catch on or not and it may inspire cultural or systemic change or not

its a way of voicing grievances in the technological age, which is supposed to be a cherished americna 'right', except now people asssemble over the world wide web, instead of in a courtyard or other physical location

I wonder how many of the fathers are convicts or ex-convicts?
It is very hard for an ex-convict to find a job and most housing won't accept them. These are basic needs for families. Many ex-cons can't provide for a family. This needs to change for non-violent ex-cons.

I am sure a lot are ex cons and it is very hard for ex cons to get a good job and support their kids. As convictions ( especially felonies) follow you for your entire life. And I agree that some non violent crimes should be down graded as not to follow a person around. But right now they are not. And the person does know the penalties of the crimes before they commit them. Especially felonies as there is usually some thought put into the crime before hand

But that apparently does not stop them from having children, and not supporting them.

And at the end of the day the kid is homeless or living in some bed bug infested motel with their mothers. Because of bad decisions or character flaws of both the man and the woman

If you can't (or have no intension of) take care of them... don't have them to begin with.

That is true. But I do think after 7 years if the felon has not re-offended, they should have that cleared.
how can they support even themselves? They did the time now clear the
crime. Many are young and just get into trouble once. But this stays with them the rest of their lives?
It's very unjust to me.

I'm sure this is one of those issues thats right on top of Hillary's platform and will fix it just as soon as she is elected. Of course, that will be after she sends more of our guys to Syria to fight the terrorists and have a bunch more come back either dead or damaged with PTSD.

Makes me sick that anyone is living on the streets. Only in America.

slaphead And all this talk of felons.
Plain & simple... The American family fell apart. And we let that happen.
And people are so self centered & complacent that they do NOT pay attention to what is going on
And we let that happen.
