A patient who passed gas during an operation was badly burned when the fart ignited a laser being used in the surgery, a hospital report states.

The unnamed woman, in her 30s, was undergoing surgery at Tokyo Medical University Hospital which involved a laser being applied to her cervix.

As the surgery was being carried out in the Shinjuku Ward, she broke wind — sparking the fire, Japanese newspaper the Asahi Shimbun reports.

She was left screaming in agony after the fire burned most of her body, waist and legs, according to a report by external experts into the incident, which was released on Oct. 28.

The committee stated in the report that no flammable materials were in the operating room during the surgery and that equipment was functioning normally.

“When the patient’s intestinal gas leaked into the space of the operation (room), it ignited with the irradiation of the laser, and the burning spread, eventually reaching the surgical drape and causing the fire,” the report stated.

The accident happened on April 15 this year but was only published in a recent hospital report. Tokyo Medical University Hospital is an acute care facility that claims to be the only facility in Japan to carry out surgery using robots.

My mother warned me about this kind of stuff.

We need a news story about someone being pulled from a car accident with dirty underwear.

we used to pull that stunt as kids, with a zippo lighter... thank God we didn't have laser beams back then.

This has got to be a scam. For one thing, gas does not "ignite lasers."

If anything, things would have to be the other way around.

In addition, using a laser to ignite methane as described, doesn't work, unless they decided to use a very large military-grade anti-missile laser. They wont fit in most operating rooms.

Also, the claim that a SINGLE EXPULSION OF GAS from a patient caused her ENTIRE BODY TO BE BURNED, is absurd. The entire room would have to have been filled with enough gas to have caused the entire room to explode, and the operating staff to have been killed, for this story to have any credence.

This is nonsense, it didn't happen.

Woman Farts During Surgery, Gets Badly Burned
http://www.opposingviews.com/i/health/woman-farts-during-surgery-gets-badly-burned/

The fire burned much of the unnamed 30-year-old’s body, including her waist and legs, the report said, concluding that no flammable materials were in the operation room during the surgery, and the operation equipment was functioning normally.

Similar cases have been reported. In his book “Curious Behavior: Yawning, Laughing, Hiccupping, and Beyond,” author Robert Provine notes that “a gassy gut can be fatal, as it was for a patient having a colonic polyp cauterized. An electric spark caused the patient’s bowels to detonate, blasting out the colonoscopy and ripping a six-inch hole in the patient’s large intestine.”

Intestinal gas consists of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen and methane, with the latter two being the flammable components, The Washington Post explains. Provine notes that only about one-third of people produce “combustible levels,” and that it’s harmless as long as it doesn’t cause a secondary fire -- such as when coming in contact with flammable surgical drapes.
