The past is the past until it becomes the present again. If someone says the past is the past and constantly repeats the actions, it is not the past.

That sentence makes sense only in case you are going to make a decision based on emotions. Otherwise I agree with you, Tom.

"Phrases" in a relationship are wonderful things.
For people that actually want to learn to communicate they can act like Rosetta Stones.

They have simplistic meanings which are pretty universal.
But then there is motive for why it's being said.
What is it the person really wants to accomplish by saying it?
Do they see me as agitated and really want me to "calm down?"
Are they trying to distract me while trying to think?
Or are they centered around their image and worried about what the people around us think?
Is it a ploy to gain control, by setting themselves up as a "victim" to my uncalmness?

Is it something else? Like their dad was abusive so they fear any confrontation so any disagreement is always seen as escalating conflict?

It can give you insight into their perspective, their mindset, their paradigm, their values.

But you need context to figure it out, context being the relationship up to that point.

All "sayings" or "phrases" have a depth of association unique to the individual saying them.

That's how you ultimately "know" someone, by figuring out (even subconsciously) their associations. What triggers what and what that means to them. Their perspective.



All of them if they are directed at me and I don't care about them, or to have a relationship with them.

Oh yes, that one definitely rates high! Might be the Nr 1 most annoying thing to say. I think it is..

In general it depends on who says it and how it is said.
Someone can say "Calm down" in a caring, loving, patronizing way.

But 'whatever' is never pleasant, is always dismissing your feelings

Oohh, yeah. The reason why "Honey, we need to talk" has the reputation it does, is because what usually follows isn't a "talk" at all. Instead, it is almost always the delivery of some intensely unpleasant information, which the "we are having a 'talk'" label, prevents us from reacting to as negatively as we would otherwise.

Which also fits in with why several other phrases mentioned above are problematic: because they act to completely dismiss the other person's right to decide their own response, in advance. Things like "don't take this wrong," and "don't be offended."
