Utah to Use Firing Squads in Upcoming Executions

firing squad for the first time since the method was reinstated in 2015 by Gov. Gary Herbert.

The three condemned, Taberon Dave Honie, Troy Michael Kell, and Ralph Leroy Menzies, all opted for the firing squad instead of the more traditional lethal injection of sodium thiopental and potassium chloride. They are all guilty of murder, with Honie also guilty of raping his ex-girlfriend’s mother in front of her grandchildren. Their execution dates have not yet been set.

Utah’s reintroduction of the firing squad comes in the middle of a national debate over the death penalty. The method was brought back in part because of a nationwide shortage of lethal injection drugs after several companies said they would stop selling them to states using them for capital punishment.

Earlier this month, Arkansas pledged to execute eight of its inmates on death row before a sedative it uses for executions expires. As of Friday, four have been killed.

In March, the Utah Department of Corrections released part of its technical manual for the execution process. In it, the state outlines how individuals who volunteer to be in the firing squad must first complete three rehearsals, be licensed law enforcement officers and pass a firearms proficiency test.

Oklahoma and Utah are the only two states with a firing squad option for death row inmates. Lawmakers in Oklahoma also introduced a method where the condemned wears a mask that is pumped with nitrogen gas until the inmate dies from oxygen deprivation.

Other states, like Mississippi and South Carolina, have introduced bills to bring back older, alternative methods, like the electric chair, because of drug shortages.

why bother with all the cost and set up tasked.. its a big deal ( and costly) to execute someone

Why not just give then a coach fare plane ticket to Chicago.. and let the folks there take care of the issue... they are shoot up the place anyway.. what's 3 more bullets?

Me too, but with the cost of electricity going thru the roof.. and they always fry them at noon.. which is at the peak usage surcharge rates, it must be cheaper just to shoot them.

This kinda tickled my funny bone.
Drugs for execution are expiring.
The world is getting weirder by the day.

PS...keep your ammo in a cool dry place.
It will keep for a very long time.

Well they could always try the " Richard Simmons workout marathon" tapes treatment.

12 hours straight

By that time I am sure they would be happy to just kill themselves.

Save all us taxpayers some bucks

What's your choice, burn to death by electricity, shot to death, or pumped full of poison. Sometimes I think these things are thought up by sadistic individuals for their satisfaction of a gruesome death. Why not just a bag over the head and bullet, quick, done. Or do they do it as some form of penance? You have to suffer equally for what you've done.

you make a point

I think the "powers to be" got caught up in the word "humane".. trying to appease most everyone in how to carry out the death penalty. i.e. gas, electric, firing squad, ect. And along the way, it became convoluted.

When a person is sentenced to death, they did the most horrific of crimes against other human beings. While I agree that it should be done in the quickest way ( which covers the humane concern). I believe in what you stated

that is a bullet to the head. that is about as quick as it can possibly get.

new plan

if found guilty of a capitol crime you get flown over north korea and
pushed out of the airplane and on a good day you even get a para shoot
if you want it

I think I would just want to be put 'to sleep'. IF there is any way for them to know(that's the rub, how do you know if people have felt pain or how much pain if they are dead?) that it is not painful. I have been drugged for both births and felt nothing. That is how I would want to go, into my last sleep.

In the most extreme cases, where there is witness, and DNA, and no other possible suspect,,,,,the punishment should be whatever the crime was

its going to deter some, and its going to make others more careful in what they leave behind,, but its a thought, ONLY When its verifiable and no other suspect is POSSIBLE,, otherwise circumstantial evidence can be WRONG and witnesses can be WRONG and confessions can be FALSE and DNA can have other explanations

so I do not trust man to get it right all the time and can not see risking killing innocent people,,,,

As far as I'm concerned the penalty should fit the method.
I'm not sure but I think that the death penalty is only applied when a murder has been done.

The convicted murderer should die by the same method they commited the crime.
If they shot someone they should be shot.
If they strangle someone they should be strangled.
and so on...

I also believe that a convicted violent rapist should be castrated, but thats just my opinion.

If a man rapes and kills women and is convicted he should be secured to a table, have his manhood violently removed while he watches and then killed by the same method he killed the woman. If there is no one method, use the first convicted method for termination.

a Bullet is definitely cheaper, and there is less chance for the Execution to be botched!

people.... PEOPLE!

Have we not evolved? a bullet???

I bet no one considered the clean up crew costs or the post bio hazard possibilities noway

I propose:

1) anesthesia
2) a bag over their head

That's it, a glad bag over their head and we're done! The bag is re-useable... think of the money saved, 67 cents a bullet, THINK ABOUT IT!!!!smokin

I thought there where a few methods to choose from ...
and this was one hanging was another ...
I say just use a over dose of heroin ...
cheap can find in most cities ... in large amounts ...
I am serious too ... looking for remedies ...
seems like the best one out there... why not ...

Excellent idea.
But there would be those, who would say it's bad,
because they might become addicted.
