Topic: Kik or Whatsapp?

I'm asked to go to those sites constantly, even by real people sometimes.

I know Nnnothththink; I too am an old school Luddite.
My mobile phone is a phone, and has a camera.

No farce book, or twits, or pintrest, or a hundred others.
Some have ongoing fees that kick in if you don't opt out within hours.

Any web site sharing photos, videos, music, and games etc., and subsequently you, can be compromised by surprises hidden in large files of data.

Plain text is good because there is nowhere for nasty encoding to hide.

It's probably safer to tell people to join mingle and communicate there.

I've asked this before, NEVER got a reply: What do you Americans mean when you say "Text message"?
These days over here that IS WhatsApp. NO ONE uses SMS anymore. The last time I had to use it cos some guy didn't have a smartphone yet, I didn't even know how to use it anymore.

Kik, nope. Briefly had that to talk to a guy I knew from here, NOT for sex chat. Haven't got it anymore, not will I install it again. Why should I? Everyone uses WhatsApp.

I use it mostly with my kids and mom and close friends. It's THE NR1 go-to app to communicate.
I guess it's different in the USA??

To be totally honest... if someone does NOT have WhatsApp I assume they're living in the stone-age still, haha. Not joking. Everyone has WhatsApp, if you don't you are seriously weird.

Hum well you can say this is a reply i guess. in the USA. I never use " text me. " . If a person " honest or not gets your real cell number for 25 us dollars they can find your real name / address. From what i've seen it is a a scammer ploy to get your phone number. Next whatsapp. Well call me caveman then. Never had it. Knoticed mostly undesirables use it. So most likely never will use it. As most have said. 2 things to factor in common sense and experiences.

That is over here, hihi. It is clear you in the USA don't use WhatsApp.
But about texting... you mean sending an SMS, right? Not using any App, just the default option any mobile has to send a text message? (called SMS over here).

Over here only some companies use that, like council to send a payment link for the rent as most people pay bills with their phone (I don't).
Other than that no one uses text anymore. It's all WhatsApp. Funny how that is different per country.

Yes Crystal, texting means a SMS message. We use WhatsApp and FB Messenger as well. But with SMS you don't need an internet connection so it doesn't use up your data usage.

Some people have limited data with their phones but unlimited calling and texting, so they can text as much as they want. When you go through the internet to use the other methods it uses up data, once that exceeds your limit, if you don't have unlimited, it slows down your internet connection. With some plans on prepaid phones you have to pay more for extra data when you exceed your monthly limit, so texting is a way to save data for when you want to be online.

Data, especially cellular data is much more expensive in the U.S. that's why most in the U.S. use SMS rather than apps really.

Ah thank you for that. Over here it changed around the time WhatsApp got so popular, and more and more people using internet on their phones.
Now it's normal to have a helluva lot more internet.
I've only got 2GB per month cos I seldom use it on my phone. 150MB used to suffice for me, hihi. I never even got through that, lol. Meaning I currently have 'saved' 6GB :) You don't lose it with a new month, it gets transferred for 3 months, then you lose the MBs from the oldest month.
I think my kids will have 10 or 20GB per month as they use their phone most of the time for internet.

WhatsApp chat doesn't cost many MBs either. When I got involved with my ex we used it an awful lot on daily basis, then my 150MB per months wasn't enough anymore. But I went up to 500MB and that was enough. Go figure. And we Apped an awful lot!! (chat, not phone via App).

As it is I think I could suffice with 150MB again, hence having 'saved up' 6GBs. ALthough I sometimes use Instagram, but if it's larger files (vids to Insta) I do it via my WiFi at home.

Funny how this differs so much per country. Maybe that has to do with how large a country is, needing more masts everywhere etc.?

Fellow Luddite here..
I don't use social media (FB, Twitter, or any of that other crap)

I hate texts....I want to read comnplete words and sentences...if you want to chat with me...either do it via an e-mail, or some other method of communication that allows more than 160 characters..

Not asking anyone else to change... and not interested in someone trying to tell *me* to "get with the times"...

Possibly, I think it has more to do with how our economy works compared to other parts of the world. Our economy, among other systems is weird compared to the rest of the world.

If done over wifi. If using cell data depends on both parties phone plans.

I have Whatsapp alright, comes in handy to send free messages to friends and relatives abroad.

But I would never give out my number to strangers

Ditto regarding the use of Whatsapp and not sharing the number with strangers... Whatsapp has been very reliable...

I have been also asked for my "hangout" app number...has anyone else been asked about hangout?

these must be popular tools/apps, or whatever. THere seems to be an automatic assumption that everyone uses them. I get so many requests to provide my Kik or Whatsapp information. Does anyone else get these requests very often?

My cell phone is basically used for contacting family on occasion. I still have not got on the bandwagon of using a phone as a computer, I have an ACTUAL computer for that, so I dont do the apps and other things, except maybe for a map because I don't want to purchase a GPS.

harmony, I do the same. I totally agree - it might not work for everyone, but it feels safer to me.
