I figure the question is directed for women to answer.

I have found that it does matter to "most" women. And, I have found that the taller ones who will go out with a shorter man, usually have a ton more self confidence.

I'm 5'2" and the most self confident woman I dated was 6'1".. she would flip people off that were trying to give us a bad time about our height difference.

I don't know that height matters.

But, it has helped me locate ceiling fans

It matters, men who are my height 5'3 or shorter tend to compete with me. Women my height, same difference. Don't ask me why or to explain. Simply my experience. Taller one's do not tend to go for me. I guess voluptuous is not in. Or as they say, I am not the right height, or the right color, or some other genius ignorant statement. To each their own. I could care less because I love me. For reals!!!!!

From what I see, there are no women that want to answer this question for real, so I will answer. I see a lot of women that want a tall guy, at least 6 feet or more.

Height matters to many, and are guys thinking they need to be really tall? I am well below average height for a female. I get men that are 6'4 and taller write to me. We would look ridiculous together. The height of a man matters.

I am not answering for women but just conveying what I read in a lot of women's profiles which is that they want taller men and some even figure in the inch difference to go with their high heels noway
To me this seems kind of shallow and actually a bit silly, but whatever makes them happy. People placing emphasis and priorities on different qualities.

I don't think it's shallow. It's biology. Same reason why dudes like younger women. It's in our DNA. That's how we lasted this long

I know two very different couples, who are friends of mine. One is a young couple who got married a few years ago, he is a head taller than me (like a basketball player) and she is about 2 heads shorter than me. On the first glance it does look awkward but it was never an issue for them. They really love each other and just had a baby.
The other couple: she is about 2 .5 heads taller than him (he is half Asian, she is Caucasian and taller than the average woman here). He is in his mid 50's and she is about 25 years younger. Just recently had another baby. Neither the height, nor their age difference ever mattered to them, they are happily married and one of the most funniest people I know and they complete each other very well, like made for each other.

I mentioned that to point out in general:
So, yes people have their set preferences but never let the smaller issue (or taller - lol) hinder you from maybe overlooking someone that might be otherwise "perfect" for you - and especially do not choose (maybe minor) preferences like that because of what other people might think. You are not in a relationship with THEM. Sometimes we care about people's opinions that we don't even know, rather than to see what really makes us happy/fulfilled and what matters in the long run.

It's certainly not shallow either

Height doesn't matter to me, it's who he is as a person that matters.

Yes, it does matter. It doesn't feel the same to be with a shorter or same height man.
Being in the arms of a man who's taller feels so much different and so much better, that I'd say it makes a helluva difference.
I feel all woman in a taller man's arms, I never had that feeling when in the arms of a shorter/same height man.
