Not when you have a job and don't have time to spend that much time doing so.

I've been chatting online since 1996.
Many different themes and subjects of which dating relationships is rather new for me (about 8 years).

Before the dot com bust, chatrooms were everywhere.
I got addicted to them at first but quickly lost interest.
People in chatrooms can be pretty weird and very deviant.

I participated in reply streams at websites for awhile.
I usually lost interest when the replies deviated from the subject.

I found bulletin boards and forums.
I liked the structure of the threads which stayed on topic.
I liked the fact there were different threads about different topics.
I've stayed with BBs & forums. I even started and still run a few.

When I was working I was able to participate much less than I do now that I am disabled.
While I now have all the time I want, I still do not stay online all the time.
I do however, return to specific forums to follow how they develop.
I find it entertaining much the same way I am entertained by movies and music.
Not 'addicted' but 'enjoying' them.

I do understand some people can get addicted to online chatting.
I guess it depends on their needs and desires and what they get from the experience.
Some people have a need to be liked by everyone.
Some people have a need to be noticed by everyone.
Some people have a need for distraction from their own lives.
Some people, all people are different and do the things they do because they choose to do them or when they have self-control issues, because they need to.

Addiction and compulsive behavior kinda go hand in hand. Some people are obsessed with online chatting. Some people must exist in that virtual presence.

Dating chatting online can become an addiction when loneliness or desperation forces them to seek a connection when no real connection is possible or permitted.
The social distancing of this pandemic might cause a certain amount of addictive behavior at online dating sites. People commonly need to feel a connection with other people. Mainly because human beings are social animals.
The main problem with this is the fact human beings need to be touched.
You can't touch someone over a TCP/IP/Wireless connection.
This doesn't stop some people from trying to get that sensation.

Not addictive at all , when you have other interests and a limited amount of time available... and if you find a connection you soon get off chatting here and real life kicks ...

Thanx, I tend to see things from a unique perspective. Most of the stuff I write seems, to me, obvious. But hey, I'm a thinker.

Are Chatting Online more addictive than Drugs & Alcohol

I don't use drugs, or alcohol.
So, I wouldn't have any data,
to base a comparison of addictions on.

I think for many people it's becoming something like that! So many people are sitting bent over with their mobiles in public transport! Of course it's better than drinking or having drugs on the bus! ))))
