I'm not a fan of our 2-party system in general because it keeps us on opposite and "opposing sides."...I want to feel free to form my own conclusions about each and every issue that comes up. (Versus having "party propoganda" stuffed down my throat!)...Right now I don't really trust any politician on either side...And I don't want to turn politics into a sport. (Where we root for our team to "win!")..It's going to take a lot of "brain power" (and "level-heads") to find solutions to the problems we face in our country. And a willingness to compromise and negotiate when need be...This is how I feel anyway. And this is why I prefer to be a "free agent." I just don't want to get all caught-up in all the "mud-slinging" back and forth.

My parents were Democrats but they didn't "sling mud" at Republicans...Basically they told me that some people voted Republican because they were in business. Or they made higher salaries and were hoping for more tax benefits etc..Back in the 50's and early 60's there weren't many "social conservatives." Fundamentalist Christians didn't seem to favor the Republican party the way they do today...I've watched things change a lot through the decades in both parties. Some Democrats like to play "nanny" today and they can definitely get carried away when it comes to playing "God" or mom or dad to their constituents. (Like Mayor Bloomberg in NYC.)...Certain rules and regulations are needed and necessary for the "public good." But there are always many different factors to consider in the "scheme of things."...I don't want to live in a "nanny state" with "big brother" (or sister) watching and regulating my every move. And I don't want to join the "Religious Right" either!..I have "differences" with both parties today.

Speaking of prejudice;

What group/party wrote the Jim Crow Laws?

What Dem. Pres. said, "Now, we'll have those n****rs voting democrat for the next 200 years?"

What MSM station refused to air speeches made by negro Repubs at the current convention?

What was then the democratic party has now turned into the republican party.

Al Gore was/is associated with high ranking members of the Klan and his Daddy tried to knock down the Civil rights act.
Johnson died a democrat.

Can you honestly say that you believe the republican party of that time is the same now and has the same views?

what has changed with the democrats that leads you to believe they aren't still the progressive elitists that want to rid the planet of the undesirables?

what is the environmental agenda?

you don't think population reduction is a key plank in their agenda?

who is the first to go?

who in the world suffers when we raise ethanol to 15% in gasoline?

who relies on corn?

think about it..

So how do you think democrats are going to rid the world of "undesirables?" Who are these undesirables?

Prejudice may tend to come from ignorance, but it also tends to come from fear of the unknown. And if your main social group is prejudiced, you may tend to take on that prejudice as an attempt to not be an outcast yourself, or simply from failure to question the group norm. A kind of intellectual laziness which is very common.

We are always prejudiced against those whom we perceive to threaten us in some way (which is why immigrants are usually the victims of prejudice because they're perceived as taking "our" jobs, regardless of the fact that "we" won't take those minimum-wage jobs anyway).

Fear, to me, is a more powerful generator of prejudice than simple ignorance. But fear is based on ignorance. Lots of reasons for prejudice. I don't think it will disappear anytime soon.

Brava,

you missed one

people can actually be 'prejudiced' (pre judging) because of experience

for instance, a female who has grown up being used or molested by males may have an UNDERSTANDABLE 'prejudice' towards men

a female, on the other hand, who has mostly read about men abusing women or heard about it, but rarely had the experience herself,, who still chooses to 'prejudge' men as without any sexual control has a less 'understandable' prejudice,, to me anyhow, although I do understand how people embrace things they hear and read about as factual

a female, who has had men love and provide and take care of her, and has been mistreated by women, but then decides its Men who are scum

is just an IGNORANT bigot,,,IMHO

,,,,,, it is often a shame that we have to live in a world where history (both distant and personal), and culture trains our minds to 'protect' us from and view others in certain boxes....

but it is also useful that our brains can use our experiences as a learning curve,, for instance learning 'patterns' in people and where they might often lead....

it takes a lifetime to continue battling the urge to put people in boxes without knowing them or their background personally,,,,

I call myself a 'recovering racist', I personally think anyone growing up in American culture is

because 'race' has such a solid and longstanding foundation in just about every aspect of our lives,,,

Msharmony,

The military helped make me racist and it has taken a long time to recover as you say.

But that was late 60s and early 70s, methinks they are better integrated now...

I think we can be "introduced" to prejudice in many different ways. (And from many different groups and organizations etc.)...My parents decided to send me to an "elite" private Catholic girl's high school. (In the hope that I would receive a "top-notch" education at this "academy!")...Some of the nuns at this school (and the dean) encouraged us to view ourselves as the "cream of the crop." And far superior to girls who attended other Catholic high schools or (heaven forbid) public school...There was definitely a "snob factor" at the school that really "bugged me."...My parents were "down-home people" who didn't believe in putting on "airs." So I ran into a big culture-clash...Eventually I left the school to get away from all the "snobbery." I didn't want to get "tainted" or brainwashed...But a lot of my classmates at the school really seemed to enjoy feeling "special" and "superior."

they didnt, although they may have learned to fight against it so that they became 'recovering' racists,,,

some racism is just much more subtle and less 'hateful' than other racism,,,
