So, again… how do we really know who’s who?

Ear tags.

In all seriousness, you just have to accept that some people will do crap like that, but the vast majority will not. And although you will run across players, liars, deceivers and the like, you will also run across honest, down to earth, genuine people as well. They are the ones who make it worthwhile.

I don’t understand...if they’re fake, then who is typing the messages they send me? what

Seriously though, I have to assume that I’m not the only person here who doesn’t pretend to be someone else, want to be someone else, or ACTUALLY BELIEVES noway they are someone else.

think Coincidentally, that’s the same response I give when asked if I believe in aliens. The fact that we exist ourselves is the very concept that makes life on other planets probable.

Well that’s just GREAT! grumble Now instead of thinking that only half of you are fake, now I'm wondering if the other half are aliens!slaphead

i find that the scammers will generally be the ones that will not take the time ti know you before saying i love you that word love gets misused alot online, im a strong believer in it takes time to fall inlove and you should not say i love you to someone unless you absolutely mean it

Quite a few told me they loved me, or they knew I was the woman that was meant for them when I first joined the sites 6 months ago. I was suspicious even then. Lately they don't say that anymore, now it's just this, "I've searched the site, found your profile, you're so beautiful, I want to get to know you more better." I get this exact same message from hundreds of guys, quesstimating, on every site, and to me they're players, or they would come up with their own original opening lines.

AthenaRose, I hear you, same here, trying the online dating thing it's been since pre 2004 some things have changed some have stayed the same.

I'm with you I can't imagine why on earth someone would do the fake profile thing, the hours of messaging, seems like a lot of wasted time and effort to me!

There are some genuine ones out there right?
Needles in a Haystack? Unicorns? ;)

How are we supposed to be able to meet people or trust them if they are hiding behind profiles that aren’t real? How do we determine the genuine people who are sincere about their intentions, from the players who are just trying to get game?

Leave the computer and go mingle with them in real life.

True McKinnon, I'm "out there" and honestly had better luck real time since I started this dating odyssey mid december. Surprisingly the grocery store has turned into a singles club while I had my head down and nose to the grindstone!!

I work for myself, I don't date within my profession, don't **** where I eat!! I can't/don't date my patients. Most of my friends in suburbia are married, so online it is. Scammers are a part of online life though, no sense worrying or getting upset about it.

Ok, I didn't read every post in this thread but read many and am wondering if I am the only person who has had good experiences on line?Dating sites are not really for me but I have made several good friends from the forums here. I did have one very intense long distance relationship that included one cross country flight to meet each other, it finally did end but after nursing my broken heart I don't regret one minute of it. I have a friend I met on a dating site, it didn't work for us as partners but we stayed friends. He met a woman on a dating site, talked for hours daily for a few months, met a few times, she is moving here to live with him in early April. Dating sites are full of the same kinds of people as populate the earth, the good, the bad and the ugly so you do have to sometimes deal with creeps. Just be smart, a little prudence goes a long way. I just wanted to say that dating sites can work and have worked for many, many people. I do think being involved in a sites forums gives you a better chance to get to know someone even before you decide to email them on a site.

Dating sites are like going to the casino. You pay your dues ,sometimes you come out a winner, sometimes you don't.
But no matter what you still had some fun, that is unless you invest way too much in which case you will learn next time.

So just hope for the best and expect the worst cause you just never really know. No real way of telling except for very obvious signs.

That's the part I don't get. Why the scammers or players create fake profiles and talk such nonsensical garbage when they can't ever expect to meet face to face because all their lies will be found out at that point. One man went so far as to appear on his profile as a white man and he was really nice and friendly, we communicated for a while, then I found out he's a black man posing just to get close to me. As soon as I discovered the truth I stopped speaking to him, not because I'm biased, because I'm not, it's because he's a blatant liar and con artist, and there's no way I could ever trust him again. So why did he waste both our time by doing this? What kind of sick game was he playing by being so deceitful? It doesn't make sense to me at all.
