Now I'm confused about who's pulling who's leg here now :/
I live in a tiny piddly country in Europe and even I know what a black man means with "boo".
I personally dislike it. To me it sounds derogatory.

Sorry Crystal I was serious...
I even asked another friend up here before I asked in here.
He had never heard of it either.

Another great reason why I like the Forums so much I learn something new almost everyday.

So true SitkaRains... including random trivia like this which can be really fun  . If the African-American guy who started this thread ever bothered to return to this forum , he would be like... "Why the hell are we talking about a Stankey Leg? ... And where the heck is MY BOO????-'

I didn't know what it meant. I've never heard it before.

No probs winx. You're among friends flowers . By the way, did any of you guys know about the term "bae"? Its another equivalent of sweetheart in the American urban vernacular. Its actually the abbreviated form of "babe". . Im just being proactive in the event that someone starts a thread about looking for their "bae" ... cuz ya know dododavid wil be sending multiple photos of a BAY and confuse the hell out of everybody! Lol

Well since that word is usually associated with a scare tactic , I can see why it doesn't exactly get your romantic juices flowing CrystalFairy ... or mine for that matter  I am no linguist expert but from what I understand, the term "boo" is actually derived from the french word "beau", which we all know means beautiful , so the intentions were good happy .
Now that you know of its sweet origin, does the petname " boo" make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside????
.....................

Me neither.

Nope, lol.
Had it been "Belle", which is the appropriate version of "beau" for a woman, then the answer would be yes.
My then hubby used to call me "Bella" (Italian for beau/belle = beautiful) and I liked that a lot!

Thanks for the explanation though. I didn't know that. It does make it feel less offensive.

I like black men. I certainly don't want to be any man's "Boo" (unless in jail and need cigarettes)....but black men are cool.

According to urban dictionary,
boo:
1. Boyfriend or girlfriend
2. Word used to scare people
1. Can you handle me? If you can't you ain't gonna be my boo.

2. Guy: BOO!
Guy 2: Holy ****!

In the years when it was not acceptable to admit that bi-racial children were common (often as a result of assault), 40-60's, bigots from both sides of the racial divide would refer to them as boo's. Sometimes it was with affection sometimes it was not. These children were often discriminated against for being light skinned, mother's and children were even abandoned to live however; usually with grandparents or other relatives far away from the core family.

Then when integration started taking hold the trend reversed and if you looked more white then you had a chance of being the token hire in the early Affirmative Action days.

FINALLY the tide turned as sheer numbers increased, and some terms have transcended to be ONLY terms of endearment. Writers in early TV were not that "aware" and the use in scripts took on the kinder connotation. Thankfully.
